Grade 4 Community News

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the end of the 2025 school year, we are incredibly proud of our Year 4 students and all they have achieved. Each student has shown great effort, growth, and enthusiasm in their learning. As the year comes to a close, our classrooms remain full of energy and curiosity, with students continuing to explore new concepts and develop important skills that will support their future learning. Below is an overview of the current projects students are working on across key learning areas.

Maths

In Mathematics, students are learning about chance and probability. They are exploring how to describe events as impossible, unlikely, likely, or certain and are using everyday examples, such as school or sport activities, to understand the language of chance. Students conduct chance experiments, such as rolling dice, tossing coins, or choosing colored balls from a bag, to see how likely different outcomes are. They are also learning to record their results using column graphs with different scales. As they develop their understanding, students are beginning to explore the difference between dependent and independent events—for example, recognising that one coin flip doesn’t affect the next, but taking an item from a bag can change what’s left for the next turn. Through these activities, students are practising reasoning and justifying their thinking about probability.

Reading

In Reading, students are exploring a range of historical texts that bring the Middle Ages to life. Through topics such as A Feudal Society, Life in a Castle, Days of a Knight, and To the Manor Born, students are learning about how people lived, worked, and interacted in medieval times. They are also reading about important figures and events, including Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Henry II, Thomas Becket, Eleanor of Aquitaine, the Magna Carta, Joan of Arc, and the Black Death.

These texts help students build their understanding of how these people and events shaped history, while developing key reading skills such as comprehension, vocabulary building, identifying main ideas, and making connections between historical events and the world today.

Writing

In Writing, students are drawing on the knowledge they have gained from their Reading lessons to craft detailed historical recounts about Medieval Europe. They are learning to write about significant figures such as Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, and Henry II, using accurate historical information to retell key events from the past. Each lesson focuses on developing specific language features—such as time connectives, descriptive detail, and topic-specific vocabulary—to help students create writing that is both engaging and historically accurate. Through this process, students are learning how to combine creativity with factual understanding to bring history to life in their own words.

Excursion

Students experienced an amazing day at Kryal Castle learning about Medieval Europe. During this experience, they’ve learned how democracy was developed and worked during this time, whilst also making connections to present-day law-making. Some more exciting opportunities, such as participation in a Manorial Court System, working together to complete a siege, and exploring the different types of armour, were also part of their fun-filled day. To finish an eventful experience filled with numerous learning opportunities, the students had the opportunity to learn a Medieval dance.
