Literacy
In Literacy, students are learning to become more independent and thoughtful readers. Our focus this week is on monitoring our reading to make sure we understand what we read. Students are learning how to stop and think while reading — noticing when something doesn’t make sense and using strategies such as rereading, slowing down, or sounding out tricky words to help them understand the text correctly.
In Phonics, we are exploring the different ways to spell the /or/ sound. Students are learning that this sound can be made with ‘aw’ (as in saw), ‘au’ (as in autumn), ‘or’ (as in storm), and ‘ore’ (as in shore). Through reading, writing, and word work activities, students are learning to identify and spell words with these patterns.
These skills help students become confident readers and writers who can recognise patterns in words and make sense of what they read.
Numeracy
In Maths, students have been learning about fractions and time.
Our focus has been on understanding fractions — recognising, reading, and writing fractions such as ½, ¼, ⅛. Students have been learning how to count collections of fractions and represent them in different ways, using objects, drawings, and numbers to show equal parts of a whole.
We have also been learning to read time on an analogue clock, focusing on o’clock, quarter past, half past, and quarter to the hour. Students are learning to identify the hour and minute hands to read and record the time accurately.
These skills help students build a strong understanding of how we divide things into equal parts and how we measure time in everyday life.
