Humanities

On Tuesday 18th of November, for Humanities, our Year 7s went out to visit Collingwood and Macleod to support their fieldwork research as part of their Geography unit on place and livability. Across the day, students collected primary data to support their assessments and deepen their understanding of how different places function for different people, services and purposes.

Students investigated social, historical, environmental, economic, political, and technological features across locations such as Abbotsford Convent, Victoria Park, Foy & Gibson, the Town Hall precinct, Macleod, Collingwood and Victoria Park train station, and Macleod Village. Working in groups, they conducted surveys, sketched field maps, recorded observations, took photos, and collected data on accessibility, sustainability, community use and overall livability.

The fieldwork students completed will directly support their upcoming assessment, where they will analyse and interpret the data they gathered to draw conclusions about what makes a place livable.

The excursion offered students the opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world spaces. Many students expressed surprise at how different Collingwood was to Macleod and Melbourne CBD.

We were also very proud of the way students represented Macleod College. They were engaged and respectful to members of the public, and showed genuine curiosity during their investigations. Thank you to all staff involved in planning and supervising the day (Angelene Alexandrakis, Joe Caflisch, Jules Brown, Chloe Pedrazzoli, Florian Forster, Kim Free, Mei Yin, Benjamin Zanin) and well done to our Year 7 cohort for their positive attitude and enthusiasm throughout the excursion!

Here’s what students said about the excursion:“I liked all the places we went and stopped at.

"It was really interesting and I got lots of good information from it.” -  Lola, 7B

“It was good to experience being on a train and learning how to take public transport.” - Sienna, 7B
