Library News - Book week
Congratulations to Deb Frenkel!
Not only a fabulous NLPS parent but now she is also a CBCA award winner! Her book The Truck Cat won the best picture book of the year award. We are so happy and excited for you.
During book week, each class that visited the library participated in an activity to make a school wide woven display. This was inspired by the CBCA short listed book Afloat.
This is a picture story book that uses the practice of weaving as a powerful metaphor for teaching of First nations wisdom, and the coming together of all people to survive, thrive, and create a more hopeful future.
Author visits
F - 2 Leigh Hobbs
During Book Week the Foundation – Year 2 students were visited by Leigh Hobbs.
He spoke about how he developed his characters both as an author and illustrator. The students had a fantastic time following his lead in drawing some of his characters.
Year 3 / 4 Judy Watson
Our Year 3/4 students enjoyed their time with Judy Watson exploring the character development from her stories and how this translated to illustrations. The students then attempted their illustrated interpretation of her characters, under her guidance.
Year 5/6 Alison Lloyd
Last Thursday our Year 5/6 students enjoyed an incursion with Alison Lloyd. Students were involved in developing their knowledge of Australian colonial history through stories and mini performances from the students.
Book Fair
Thank you once again to Robyn Grayson and her amazing book fair team! We really appreciate your efforts in providing this opportunity for students to purchase books, which goes towards supporting the purchasing of books for our library.
Student Activities
Besides Wally making an appearance in most classes last Wednesday, students also enjoyed looking for 20 Wallys around the school at recess and lunchtime. Within the library there was an abundance of activities for students to participate in, such as mazes, book puzzles, adventure puzzles, word finds, and a massive 'I spy'.
Book Week Parade
The excitement leading up to the parade, discussing preparations for book character dress ups for our parade, was a delight to behold. The thrill in the air upon arriving at school seeing friends and parading around in front of the school was a pleasure to watch. We sincerely appreciate all the efforts parents went to in assisting with costumes. We hope the shear enjoyment and happiness displayed on all participants' faces made your efforts worthwhile.
I Am Malala - Book Drive
Currently, our Year 5/6 students are reading the Young Readers edition of 'I Am Malala'.
As part of this learning experience, families at Newport Lakes Primary School have the opportunity to support the Malala Fund - an organisation dedicated to ensuring every girl has the chance to learn and shape her own future.
To contribute to this inspiring cause, we are offering all families of all year levels the opportunity to purchase copies of the adult edition of 'I Am Malala' from the school at a very low price of $5.00 per book. All money raised from book sales will be donated directly to the Malala Fund.

Donations/orders will close on Friday 31st October 2025, unless supply is exhausted beforehand.
Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani female education activist, and producer of film and television. She is the youngest Nobel Prize laureate in history, receiving the prize in 2014 at age 17, and is the second Pakistani and the only Pashtun to receive a Nobel Prize. Her book 'I am Malala' is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.
