Years 2 & 3

Another busy couple of weeks in the 2/3 room. Our fluency work in reading and maths has provoked some discussions about why and how we read and do maths for different purposes. We have discussed that fluency means we can recognise and recall words and basic number facts automatically and easily, and that this frees up our brain to work hard on the more layered and complex tasks involved in reading and doing maths.

In English and Maths we have also been drilling more deeply into content vocabulary over the past weeks to make sure we all have the tools to understand instruction and talk about our work in the common language of the classroom.

Our reading and writing work has continued to be centred around our class text, The Iron Man. We have explored vocabulary in the text and practiced the comprehension strategy of writing summary sentences of read material. Word work has focused on regular and irregular past tense verbs and words with a final e. We have also continued reading non-fiction texts about iron and collecting information in written form in preparation for our future writing task.

In Maths we have spent a couple of weeks in the world of 'space', which involves exploring shapes, positions, and mathematical movement across space. 'Parallel' and 'perpendicular' have been our tongue twisting words of the fortnight! Through describing position using grid coordinates, students have also learned to play battleships.

The costumes for the Book Week day yesterday were fantastic and we spent a lovely morning sharing a love of books and participating in a variety of book related activities. The 2/3 students regularly ask to read when they are finished their work and it is great to see their continued progress in this area.
