š©Our Murray River Rainbowfish aquaculture project blends science, culture, conservation and community!
Last year, our Year 10 Ignite students partnered with Native Fish Australia (NFA) to explore the conservation of this small but ecologically significant native species. This year, the 2025 Ignite cohort, alongside our Year 9/10 Indonesian Language students, have expanded the project to focus on aquaculture, breeding, sustainability and habitat protection for the Murray River Rainbowfish.
Ā
Ā
On Friday 8th August we proudly welcomed back past students, current students, greeted our Indonesian partner school staff and students, and hosted special guests for a Rainbowfish Presentation and Science Week 2025 Launch. This successful event featured talks from Mrs Scollen (2024 Ignite teacher and Science Domain Leader), Mr Tim Curmi (President of Native Fish Australia), our 2025 Year 10 Ignite students and our Year 9/10 Indonesian Language students. Weād like to thank every single student and staff involved for their efforts in starting this project at our school.
Ā
As a cross-curricular project, the launch was livestreamed to our partner school in Indonesia and presented in both English and Indonesian! This allowed us to share not only our scientific understanding of the Murray River Rainbowfish, but also the broader message of environmental sustainability, something which our partner school in Indonesia has also been focusing on.
Ā
š© To celebrate Science Week 2025, the Ignite students have prepared a program of Rainbowfish-themed Science Week activities ā from library displays to a plastic-free lunch day to an āopen tankā session for our school community to visit the rainbow fish. Weād like to invite everyone to learn more, get involved, and help protect this special native fish species with us!
