Grade 6

Reading
The grade 6’s have been continuing their novel studies on the text ‘Can you See me?’ by Libby Scott and Rebecca Westcott. The students have been investigating what it is like to live with Autism and how the world might see someone with Autism as ‘broken’. The novel has many Autism facts scattered throughout and gives some pro’s and con’s of living with it.
Writing
Students are currently trying to persuade Mr Abdallah that Grayling should have a therapy dog. We have been looking at different connectives to add to our writing, including connectives of addition, cause and effect, as well as contrast. It has been encouraged to use these as well as a plethora of research to help convince Mr Abdallah that this is the best thing for Grayling.
Maths
Year 6’s have started looking at what angles are and how to measure them. Students can now identify the 6 types of angles (acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex and revolution), what complementary and supplementary angles are, how to find vertically opposite angles, finding missing angles in circles, triangles and quadrilaterals, and how to use a protractor to find unknown angles at a vertex.
Integrated
We have just begun looking at the parliamentary voting system used in Australia. We have started looking at what parties are and how they are run as well as how in Australia we use ‘preferential voting’ during elections.
Year 6’s also had the chance to participate in a STEM themed Spelling Bee. Well done to all the finalists from our cohort.
