Grade 3

Literacy

Over the past two weeks, we have wrapped up our work on Finding Our Heart by creating Personal Response Book Summaries. Students wrote one paragraph to summarise the main facts in the book in their own words, and a second paragraph sharing their personal response. This included what they thought of the book, how the pictures and words added meaning, any deeper messages they noticed, and whether they would recommend it to others. They then used a checklist to uplevel their work before presenting it verbally to their peers. It was wonderful to see the depth of understanding and the confidence students showed in sharing their thoughts.

This week, we have begun exploring The Iron Man (not the Marvel superhero we all know and love!). Already, students have been using their schema to visualise, make deep connections, and infer meaning beyond what is explicitly written. In writing, we are building our knowledge of what iron is and beginning research for an upcoming information report.

Numeracy

Over the past few weeks, our Year 3 students have been learning how to read and write time in both analogue and digital formats. They began by focusing on analogue times to the quarter hour, learning to use the terms quarter past and quarter to. We then moved on to telling the time to the nearest five minutes, counting around the clock in fives.  Students have also learned how to read analogue times to the nearest minute by identifying the correct positions of the hour and minute hands, skip counting by fives, and then counting single minutes.

In addition, they have been developing their skills in reading analogue clocks and recording the matching time in digital form, understanding the hour and minute sides of a digital clock, and writing times digitally. Throughout these lessons, students have engaged in interactive activities, discussions with partners, and real-world time challenges to consolidate their understanding.

Additional Lessons

In our Geography lessons, students have been busy learning about Australia and the world around us. They have moved from learning about the natural and manmade features that make Australia unique and special to learning about Australia’s closest neighbours. They have learnt where these countries are located. We now shift to learning about the people, animals, plants and geography of African countries.

During our Social and Emotional Learning lessons, students have been discussing how to make and keep friends, and the importance kind words and actions in creating and maintaining relationships.
