Buying My First Car

Year 11 VM Numeracy

This Term, the three VM Numeracy classes completed a Unit which included a visit to Car City at Ringwood to investigate buying their first car. Below is the process they followed:

Students first predicted their first year wages as an apprentice to ascertain the budget.

They then decided what kind of vehicle suited their needs and wants.

Before they attended the excursion they already had a short list. They had to choose the car which best suited their budget and needs.

They were given the restrictions that they had to pay 10% deposit and borrow 90% of the car. They could choose the length of time they wanted to pay the car off. They also calculated how much interested they paid back.

After the excursion they researched the cost of registration and insurance. Many students were quite surprised how much difference there was in comprehensive insurance if you were a seventeen year old male compared to their much more mature, female teacher.

Students enjoyed the unit of study and found the relevance in the unit refreshing. Next Term, they will be studying Geometry and will include the geometry of mini golf.
