Aviation Camp
Career & Pathways
Last week, the Careers and Pathways team took 20 enthusiastic Year 10-12 students on our inaugural Aviation Camp. This was a great opportunity for students to explore a range of careers in aviation, covering a wide variety of industries within this area. We received overwhelmingly positive feedback from our students and their parents, and hope to offer the same experience again in 2027!
Some words from our students:
This year marked an exciting milestone for Wantirna College as we successfully organized our first-ever careers-focused camp for Year 10-12s. As a Year 12 student navigating the demands of VCE, I was initially hesitant about stepping away from my studies. However, what unfolded over the two days was an incredible journey filled with career insights, hands-on learning, and unforgettable moments.
The adventure began early as we gathered in the Wantirna College courtyard before setting off for Melbourne Airport. Our first stop featured an engaging tour and presentation on career pathways within the Aviation industry, providing us with a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at airport operations. From there, we travelled to the RAAF Base in Point Cook, where we explored the RAAF Museum and gained valuable insight into careers in the Australian Defence Force.
After an afternoon of travel and settling into our accommodation at Tasman Holiday Parks in Geelong, we enjoyed a delightful group dinner at Cucina One 12 in Belmont. The evening concluded with free time in the communal areas, allowing us to unwind and reflect on the day’s experiences. One of the most memorable moments was the surprise birthday celebration we organized for Mrs Dennison, complete with cake and presents, a heartfelt and joyous way to end our first day.
Friday was dedicated to the highly anticipated Avalon International Airshow Careers Day. Following breakfast at the camp kitchen, we headed to Avalon, where we split into interest-based groups to explore career sessions and industry exhibits. With professionals from various fields sharing their expertise, the event offered an eye-opening glimpse into potential career pathways and opportunities.
The afternoon continued with additional sessions and exhibits, leading up to an unforgettable evening at the airshow itself. Watching the spectacular aircraft displays and performances up close was a breathtaking experience that left a lasting impression on many of us. After an action-packed two days, we departed for home, arriving back at Wantirna College for parent pick-up around 10:30 pm.
Looking back, this camp was a truly enriching experience that allowed us to connect with industry professionals, explore diverse career options, and gain a clearer vision for our futures. Beyond the career insights, it was also an opportunity to bond with classmates and teachers in a dynamic and inspiring setting.
A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated staff who made this experience possible, especially Mr. Knowles for helping organize Mrs Dennison’s birthday surprise! The Wantirna College Careers Camp was an unforgettable and valuable experience—one that we hope will continue for future students.

Aviation camp was the best camp/excursion I’ve ever been on! We visited many incredible places, including Melbourne Airport, the RAAF Base, and the Avalon Airshow. Along the way, we were treated to some amazing surprises, making the experience even more memorable. We learned so many fascinating facts and gained valuable insight into career opportunities in aviation and the ADF. A huge thank you to Mr. Knowles and Ms. Dennison for organising this event, and to Mr. Hoogkamer for driving long distances to take us to these incredible places!

The aviation camp was an amazing opportunity to be a part of. The experiences of visiting Melbourne Airport, learning about the RAAF Museum and the different types of planes, and finally attending the air show were incredible. From all the posters saying, "There’s no show like the air show," I would have to agree. The freebies, the experience, and the feeling of hearing the planes fly by made it unforgettable. I sincerely thank the teachers who made this trip possible.
~ Thomas Megee, Year 11
The highlight of the aviation camp was being able to go into the military helicopter and watching the Avalon Airshow, even though it was canceled because one of the pilots was involved in a crash.
