Spanish Cooking Experience

¡Qué éxito! Our Spanish cooking experience was a hit!

These past couple of weeks, our Grade 5/6 students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in Hispanic culture by making and enjoying their own empanadas - one of the most beloved traditional foods across Spain and Latin America. Watching them work together, embrace the experience, and savour their deliciosas empanadas was truly heartwarming. This was more than just a cooking lesson - it was a chance to share a part of my culture that is deeply personal to me. Growing up, I learned how to make empanadas from my family, and it’s something that has always connected me to my heritage. And now, our school is becoming a part of this tradition! By learning how to cook empanadas, our students are not just tasting the food, but immersing themselves in a cultural experience that has been passed down through generations.

From the very start, the cohesión and teamwork were on full display. Each student played a vital role, whether it was adding the perfect amount of filling, sealing their empanadas, or helping with clean-up. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to absorber (absorb) the experience showed how powerful cultural learning can be when it’s hands-on. Un aplauso to all students who gave their best effort and made this such a special experience.

A Little History on Empanadas

Empanadas have been enjoyed for centuries and have roots tracing back to Spain and Portugal. The word empanada comes from the Spanish verb “empanar”, which means “to wrap in bread”. They were originally designed as portable meals for travelers and workers, making them a practical and delicious staple. As Spanish explorers traveled to Latin America, they brought this tradition with them, and today, every Hispanic country has its own special version—from empanadas Argentinas with beef and spices to empanadas de queso (cheese empanadas) popular in Chile and Colombia.

Food & Culture: More Than Just a Meal

In Hispanic culture, food is much more than just something we eat - it’s about family, tradition, and bringing people together. By making empanadas, students weren’t just cooking; they were celebrando (celebrating) a tradition that has connected families for generations. Seeing them embrace this cultural experience with such alegría (joy) was truly special.Wishing all our families a great school holiday break! Enjoy the time with your loved ones, and I can’t wait to see you all next term for more exciting Spanish learning.

¡Felices vacaciones! ☀️
