Year 5/6 Canberra Camp
Our Year 5/6 students recently enjoyed an unforgettable three night camp in Canberra, packed with learning, exploration and plenty of fun.
The adventure began with an early morning departure and a journey along the Hume Highway, with stops in Holbrook and Jugiong before arriving at the Australian Institute of Sport. Students toured the world-class facilities with elite athletes, explored a range of sporting venues and tested their own skills through interactive Sportex activities. After settling into camp, the day finished with dinner, team games and a well-earned night's sleep.
Day two was filled with visits to some of Australia's most significant landmarks. Students took in the stunning views from Mount Ainslie before exploring the Australian War Memorial and Anzac Parade. They also visited the Australian Electoral Commission to learn about Australia's voting system, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of Australia and finished the day with an exciting evening at Questacon.
Our final day included tours of Parliament House, the National Capital Exhibition, the National Arboretum Canberra and the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. Students also had the opportunity to explore Canberra's international embassy precinct, gaining a deeper understanding of Australia's history, democracy and national identity.
The camp provided an incredible opportunity for students to extend their classroom learning while creating lasting memories with their peers.
A huge thank you to Mr Ross for his outstanding organisation of the camp, and to all of the staff who generously gave their time and support to make the experience possible.
Most importantly, we are incredibly proud of our Year 5/6 students. They represented our college with enthusiasm, curiosity and outstanding behaviour throughout the trip. Staff at the many venues we visited consistently commented on how respectful, engaged and well-mannered our students were. They were wonderful ambassadors for our school, and their families should be extremely proud of the way they embraced every opportunity during this fantastic camp.

Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $67.50 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs.
