Hearing Awareness Week

Every year during Hearing Awareness Week the Deaf Facility Team provides professional learning for our staff during our weekly staff meeting. This week Kristen Whytre hosted a panel session called ‘You Can’t Ask That’ (adapted from the TV show). Thank you to our wonderful panellists,  who put themselves ‘out there’ in front of the whole staff and answered a range of questions, sharing their experiences of living with a hearing loss.

We invited 8 panellists, all of whom have a significant hearing loss; 5 Facility students (Jayden, Giselle, Heath, Panshul and Phoenix) and 3 staff (Aimee, Nick and Jackie M). Jackie D has a son, Jack who is profoundly deaf and she was our 9th panellist.

Our teachers asked a broad range of questions which were ably answered by our panel. Some of the questions included:-

•         What devices do you wear?

•         What situations are hardest for you to hear in?

•         Do you tell people you are deaf?

•         What do you find annoying about being deaf?

•         How do you wake up in the morning?

•         Are there any things that you don't do because of your hearing loss?

Hearing Awareness Week is an important week at MVPS and I recognise the expertise, professionalism and dedication of our facility staff. Their expert skills and advocacy has a significant and positive impact on our students with hearing loss. I also recognise all teachers and support staff throughout the school for their commitment to working together so that our facility students thrive at school and beyond.

Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to all of our students in Year 3 to 6 who participated in our Athletics Carnivals this week. These events allow all our students to challenge themselves and do their best in a variety of track and field events. They are to be commended for their skills, perseverance and effort and for the way that they supported and encouraged each other. Thank you to Merryn Ashcroft for organising these important events and to all of the MVPS staff and family members for contributing to the smooth running of both the Year 5 -6 and Year 3-4 Athletic Carnivals.

Year 4 Camp

Our Year 4 students and staff are well prepared for their camp Philip Island next week. They will leave school on Tuesday morning for this exciting camp experience. Our camping program allows students to develop new skills while gaining independence in a new environment with their friends and teachers. You may notice that our Year 4 students return to school next Friday with new confidence and pride in themselves.
