Forest School

We have had a wonderful start to our Term 1 Forest School program. During our first sessions we spent time discussing emergency procedures. The children know that if the whistle is blown three times, they return directly to the yarning circle at the Ecoshed. We talked about possible emergency scenarios and revised safety protocols in case a snake is sighted. All children at Macedon Primary School show incredible maturity and thoughtfulness when considering safety in the bushland. In order for us to engage in safe risk taking, we discuss boundaries and protocols in case of an unexpected incident. It is due to the children’s understandings of these guidelines that we are able have such free and independent play during Forest School sessions.

The children dived straight into the mud, dam and sand when they went off to play! Amazing investigations of the different sites occurred and valuable observations were made. The children noted how Middle Gully has changed over the past few months and were especially excited that the nashi pears were ready to eat! The children understand that they can eat one piece of fruit per visit so that each class has an opportunity to pick and eat a piece for him or herself. The nashi pears are juicy and delicious!

Parents and carers with a current Working with Children’s check are welcome to attend Forest School sessions. Having an extra adult onsite allows us to extend our activities to dam visits and fire lighting. Please send me an email if you would like more information: Sarah.Kline@education.vic.gov.au
