Year 1 Team

Snapshot of Year 1!

We are so proud to share the wonderful progress our students are making in Year 1! It’s been an exciting time as our students settle into the Learning Community with enthusiasm and curiosity. We are thrilled to see them embrace new challenges and opportunities for growth.

In our English unit we have explored both reading and writing. To develop reading fluency an emphasis has been placed on choral reading, where students all read a text together with their teacher and then explore a text in buddies and small groups within their grade. In our literary explorations, we've delved into captivating texts such as Grandpa and ThomasGrandpa and Thomas and the Green Umbrella, and Gary. These stories have not only sparked imaginations but also provided avenues for making predictions, forming connections, and discovering personal strengths. Students have been honing their skills when exploring recounts by asking the essential 5Ws: who, what, where, when, and why.

In our Core Literacy sessions, we’ve placed an emphasis on spelling and grammar. To enhance learning and engagement, students have been given the opportunity to utilise a range of hands-on materials. Excitingly, we’ve introduced our new whiteboard tables in the learning community, providing a dynamic space for interactive learning experiences.

In Maths, we have been working on place value and statistics, with students exploring numbers up to 120 and exploring data through tallying and pictographs. Through rich tasks and hands-on explorations, they are developing a deeper understanding of numerical concepts, paving the way for mathematical fluency.

During our dedicated Learning Community wellbeing sessions, we’ve explored how iPads can be used to enhance our students learning, while fostering discussions on cyber safety. It’s crucial for us to equip our students with the skills and knowledge to navigate the digital world responsibly. Drawing upon our school's expectations, we’ve placed a significant focus on resilience this term. Students are actively working on developing friendships, understanding their emotions, and exploring strategies for overcoming challenges.
