Year 5 & 6

Around our level

Apart from the everyday learning that occurs, the Year 5/6 students have been involved in the sports Gala Day and Crazy Hair Day. The Year 5 students have participated in NAPLAN and the Year 6 students have been planning fundraising activities as they would like some bench seats for the sanctuary. Part of their planning involves providing reasons for the bench seats, researching the cost of the seats and where they should be placed. Our 14 captains have been working together to plan for an evening activity whilst on camp. We have also had a couple of level meetings. The students have an opportunity to write down questions which we then answer at these meetings. Last week’s meeting was mainly talking about camp. The only question we couldn’t answer was, ‘What will the weather be like?’ By the time you are reading this, we will be at camp and we will know the weather! Hopefully, beautiful sunshine but not too hot. Apart from sending out a link with camp photos next week (hopefully), the next newsletter will be filled with camp news.

We also have a new look in the BER. Mr Darby was able to obtain coloured chairs for our classrooms and the middle area. It has really brightened up the area.

GALA Day

Last Friday, the Year 5/6 students participated in a Gala Day. They played against 4 or 5 schools in the sport they had chosen; basketball, volleyball bounce, cricket or hot shots (similar to tennis).

Keep reading to hear some of the comments about the day from the students.

5/6A

It was fantastic. I played my favourite sport for a whole day. My team won the grand final, we were so bubbly. But I still would have liked to have interschool sport every week on a Friday, but this was a new experience that I liked. It made my legs feel as though I have been tortured, so I guess you can say I worked hard.

Liah

Gala Day was so much fun! We won all of our games, which I was very happy about. We put in so much effort and worked well together!

Jade

It was fun and I was very excited to play tennis. I think the MVP for the tennis team would be Zoe Raftis as she could only play with one arm. I think we should do another Gala Day because we had more fun playing 2 to 3 different schools all on the same day.

Kaylea

I really enjoyed the Gala Day. In my opinion, it was a great day to experience new sports, play different schools, and get an opportunity to play finals! I was in the -A basketball- team and we made it through to the next round which I'm really excited to see how far we get. I love my team as we work so well together and make sure we all get turns in everything. One of the highlights of the day was that I got my first three pointer which was very exciting. The Gala Day was a really cool idea, instead of having to play every week. I think we should keep doing the Gala Day!

Alyssa

My team had so much fun playing hot shots. I really enjoyed the day.

It was good but we lost some games and I had sore legs all weekend. It was painful but I had so much fun and we won 2 games so it was overall very fun.

Kai

I loved Gala Day because we got to go to a different school and play a sport. The sport I played was cricket. It was so fun. I loved the team I was in and I loved playing cricket. My dad said I should play cricket and I want to play so if you want me to play cricket for interschool sport, well I am free for that. I love cricket.

Addy

It was really good and I enjoyed playing volleyball bounce. I liked playing so many rounds at once, instead of playing one round a week with only two weeks of prior practice. I felt so much more prepared when we had so many days of practice before the day. Having a Gala Day was fun because while you were having a break you could watch other schools play against each other. Everyone was really nice and I would definitely do it again.

Isla

I thought Gala Day was pretty fun because you got to compete against other schools. I mainly thought it was fun because it was like a big game where you could also play with your friends when you had a break or you could do a practice match where it didn't matter if you lost or not. A lot of the people were also very supportive.

Eva

I liked Gala Day because we had  no work. We got to verse other schools and people that we don't know. I liked how we could practise against the wall when we had free time. Everybody was very supportive of each other even the scorers. I enjoyed it very much and can't wait to do it again.

I loved Gala Day as it was fun. I loved playing Volleyball Bounce. I loved meeting different people and playing against different teams. The bus ride was fun too. I am looking forward to doing it again.

Luca C

This term for Gala day I played basketball. I had more fun than I expected. Honestly I was very proud of myself even though we only won 2 out of 4 games, I  even scored six points which is a surprise because I'm a defender not an attacker. I would rather do this than interschool sport honestly. I loved the team I had and I know that I tried my best which is all that counts. I really hope to do this again next term.

Sofia

Gala Day was very fun, but also very exhausting! I really enjoyed playing the mini games of cricket one after the other and I think that my team played very well, and that we put all our practice to use. But it was tiring because each team had 10 overs and we had to run a lot! But overall Gala Day was very fun and it taught me a lot about team effort and encouragement for my team and other teams!

Achala

My thoughts about Gala Day is that it was fun. I liked playing with my team. It was heaps of fun versing different schools all in one day. We lost the semi final so we didn't make it into district. Overall, it was a good day and Robyn was a good coach.

Levi

I did hotshots for Gala day and I thought it was really fun because it was really chill and everybody was super kind and thoughtful. It was a really fun experience because even though we didn't make it into semi-finals it didn't matter because we tried our best.

Harper.
