Ridley House News

Mr David Meehan - Pastoral Leader - Ridley

During Term 1, as a House group, we have discussed Australian professional surfer, Sally Fitzgibbon and her quest to regain a position on the World Surfing League Top 10. At an age when many would suggest she retire, Fitzgibbon has taken the step to challenge herself via promotion from the lesser Challenger Series. It’s a great example of commitment, resilience and taking responsibility for your own position in life. We’ve also had a look at the story behind the recently released Hollywood movie, “The Boys In The Boat”. It’s the story of the 1936 USA Olympic Rowing 8. The team itself was the University of Washington junior team. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, this team of very inexperienced young men, had to fight against poverty as well as local and foreign prejudices. The team of men, who came from very little, rise to become Olympic Champions through determination and effort.

In both cases the ideas of: resilience, accepting a challenge and taking responsibility for your own future, were the themes for the boys to explore.

As always, Term 1 is an extremely busy time of the year.

We welcomed our new Year 7 cohort to the Secondary School and in week three the year 7’s enjoyed a three-day camp at Camp Maranatha near Yandina. The boys were challenged and used the time to get to know each other through several team-building activities.

In Week 4 we all participated in the Inter-House swimming carnival. Congratulations to the boys on their involvement and spirit on the day.

The Year 12’s held their Formal on Saturday 20 February at the Brisbane City Hall. A great night was had by all. The boys certainly displayed fine manners in the way they attended to their partners, provided introductions and simply enjoyed themselves. Well done Year 12s.
