Reading and Viewing
Students will be exploring a range of texts - digital and hardcopy that will be integrated to meet the literacy needs of our religion and biological science inquiry topic. They will be exploring and establishing connections between texts that focus on different biome features of our world. They will read about the impact of human interference and sustainability. Activities will be differentiated to meet the needs of the children. Through Guided Reading sessions the students will explore a novel and will revise and consolidate different comprehension strategies in interpreting and responding to texts.
Writing
This term students will focus on writing to inform and writing to explain. These writing genres will link directly to our Science Inquiry unit on Biological Science and Religious Education. We will look at the different structures and language features specific to text type. At this level students will be required to locate information, summarise and paraphrase in their own words to create information/explanation reports
In Spelling, students will be supported through weekly activities that enable them to practise their spelling words. The three groups will be differentiated to meet the children's needs and most weeks there will be a weekly dictation activity as well as partner spelling tests. Children will have a mixture of group words and individual spelling words they need to work on. Students will learn grammar conventions that will help enhance writing, such as time connectives, technical noun usage, and informative text language features.
Speaking and Listening
Students will continue to focus on improving their speaking and listening skills. They will be practising how to speak clearly, confidently, and effectively in a variety of situations, such as prayer, discussions, presentations, and class conversations. They will continue to actively listen to others and participate in group discussions. In collaborative groups students will also plan and deliver short presentations on given topics.
Maths
Number and Algebra
This term students will undertake a unit on multiplication and division. Students will be working with whole numbers to build fluency and recognition across a range of different contexts. Students will then explore, extend and practice applying various strategies to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division equations with and without technology. Students will compare, order and represent decimals. They will investigate strategies to solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with the same denominator.
Space
In our unit on location, students will learn about the concepts of location, position, and direction. They will develop their understanding of coordinates, grid references, and compass directions. Through hands-on activities, students will develop their spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Statistics and Probability
In learning about Statistics and Probability, students will focus on chance by learning about probability and chance outcomes. We will use tallies to record and collect data and learn how to use this data to create graphs. They will interpret a range of data displays, including a variety of variables.
Inquiry - We are Keepers of the Earth: Biological Science
This term, students will explore different biomes in our world and the different physical and behavioural features of the flora and fauna that have adapted so that they can survive under constantly changing conditions. They will investigate the impact that human intervention has had on different landscapes (deforestation/land clearing) and their impact on the animals within these habitats as well as the global impact on our world. Students will investigate how first Nations People on different continents were the first Earthkeepers with no impact on the biomes they lived on. Cooperatively students will use their research skills as future Earthkeepers to create reports on environmental issues and sustainability. They will investigate how individuals, councils, governments & corporations globally are working together to find solutions to environmental issues.
Religion
Students will learn about the Sacrament of Confirmation and its role in the Catholic faith. They will explore the history and meaning of Confirmation, and reflect on the spiritual significance of receiving the Holy Spirit. Through prayer, reflection, and discussion, students will deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith and prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. Students will learn about the importance of Pentecost. They will explore the biblical story and reflect on how these teachings can be applied to their own lives.
Social and Emotional Wellbeing
Students will be learning about “Personal Strengths’. As we are all different, personal strengths vary between individuals. Our strengths are different and unique to us. Having strengths will help students when faced with challenges academically, emotionally and socially. These will be linked with the ‘Fruits and Gifts of the Spirit’ as students prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
