Exploring Indigenous Culture A Journey with Year 9 RISE Class

Creating Futures Together

In line with our commitment to embrace Indigenous perspectives and fostering holistic learning experiences, the Year 9 RISE class recently embarked on an unforgettable excursion as part of the Aboriginal Content Curriculum (ACCur) program. This innovative program, designed to offer a cross-curricular approach to learning, is set to be rolled out throughout the school in 2025.Students participated in the Aboriginal walking tour at the Birrarung Marr (Yarra River) and other culturally significant sites within Melbourne CBD. These tours allowed students to delve into Indigenous heritage and history in the heart of our vibrant city. The narratives and interactive experiences have undoubtedly fostered a profound appreciation for Indigenous culture and its enduring presence in our city.

The Birrarung Wilam Walk, which commenced at Federation Square and led to the Birrarung Wilam Aboriginal art installations. It offered a captivating journey into the rich history of the Birrarung and the Indigenous Peoples of the Kulin Nation. Guided by a knowledgeable Cultural Experience Guide from the Koori Heritage Trust, students gained insights into how Melbourne's landscape has evolved over time and discovered the profound significance of the Birrarung Wilam to the local Kulin peoples.

As we reflect on this enriching experience, we hope to carry forward the knowledge gained from this excursion in our learning journey at Wheelers Hill Secondary College.
