Mock Trials

Year 7 Humanities

Year 7 Humanities

Throughout Term 1, Year 7s at Brinbeal Secondary College have learned about the government and legal system as part of their Civics and Citizenship curriculum in Humanities. In week 6 while learning about fair trials, our cohort trialed a range of experiential learning strategies that explored the process of civil and criminal trials, the roles of key personnel in the court room and elements of a fair trial. Students performed key roles from the courtroom for their peers including: the judge, the attorneys, the accused, witnesses, court reporters and the jury through scripted and unscripted roleplays to supplement their learning. At the end of the sessions, the jury determined the verdict based on the evidence presented and students were able to identify how the roles of key personnel assisted the fair processes within the legal system - including some off-script misadventures that were well managed our judges!

I really enjoyed having fun and laughter. One thing I learned was how the courts work.

Something that happened during our role play was the defendant tried to bribe their way out of trouble which was an example of unfair justice. One thing I enjoyed about the activity was acting and it felt like a real court.

Something I learned in the role play was that when you lose the case you will be fined.
