Welcome from the Cultural Room

Rising from the Embers

In celebration of National Reconciliation Week – The University of Newcastle and the Wollotuka Institute hosted the 2024 Rising from the Embers Festival. The unique festival aimed to increase community access and knowledge to local land and water management best practices.

Aboriginal students across years 8 and 10 from FGHS were invited to the University of Newcastle, chaperoned by Aunty Dawn and Miss Parker, to join in on the celebrations of culture and sustainability.

The festival consisted of information booths, hosted by community members from a variety of professional backgrounds, such as the Australian Defence Force and council environmental groups, which students could access to learn about environmental sustainability and innovation, land and water management and celebrating culture and community.

Our students demonstrated the Francis Greenway values of respect, cooperation, responsibility, and commitment. Assisting elders and store holders with setting up their spaces, networking with like-minded individuals from various schools across the region and displaying great pride in culture and story.

Xieke Roach assisted the videographer on the day, filming and interviewing attendees, learning fundamental skills in digital documentation, and finding a new passion for photography and digital media.

Cultural Leadership Camp

Some of our future First Nations leaders had the opportunity to attend a 3-day Cultural leadership camp at the Murrook Cultural Centre with 10 other schools across NSW. The students participated in cultural activities and a leadership workshop with the inspirational Kylie Captain. The students were not only able to build on their cultural knowledge and heritage but now know how to be a better leader. They were able to build strong connections with students across NSW where they have now made fabulous memories and friendships.
