Support Faculty

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out” – Robert Collier

Welcome back to Term 2!

Both students and staff in the Support Faculty have hit the ground running for yet another term, engaging in a wide variety of learning experiences!

We were able to kick off this Term with our Support Unit Carnival Fun Day! Whilst the weather wasn't pleasant, our students (and staff) were engaged with a range of activities, including Bingo, Just Dance, a STEM challenge, crafts and board games. All students are to be commended on their attitudes on the day!

Boccia Tournament

Boccia is an all-inclusive precision ball game. It was played for many years as a leisure activity before being introduced at the New York 1984 Paralympics as a competitive sport. Each year the NSW Department of Education run a statewide competition. This year 233 high schools have entered.

All students in Support have had the opportunity to learn how to play Boccia this semester. Recently, we held our Boccia team try outs and 28 students attended. Nine students were selected in our FGHS Boccia team. On Friday, 24th May, our team including Daniel Hooper, Connor Lancaster, Malakai Latham-Skelly, Candice Hurrell, Alex Bates, Brody Hackett, Sophie Jones, Macey Neilsen and Xavier Reckwell travelled to Maitland to participate in round 1 of the competition AND WON!!! We are extremely proud of their efforts, and wish them all the best when they compete in the next round in Sydney on Wednesday, August 14! Congratulations again to all!!

Hunter Disability Expo

On Friday May 10, support students in Year 12 travelled to Newcastle Entertainment Centre to attend the Hunter Disability Expo. Students were able to engage with a range of vendors, learning about the various careers and support services that are available post-schooling. All students who attended demonstrated exemplary behaviour and scored some awesome goodie bags!

Social Gatherings

We are fortunate enough to engage in regular social gatherings combining all Support classes. Students have had a blast participating in team activities. These sessions have not only promoted physical fitness and problem-solving, but have also strengthened friendships and communication skills.

As we continue to move throughout the term, we look forward to more growth, learning and other exciting activities! Until next time!
