Year 12 Japanese Beginners

Japanese restaurant excursion: Students enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant to complement their studies on Japanese food and eating out, then wrote a review of the experience in Japanese.

Year 12 students will sit their HSC Speaking Examination on Saturday September 7. Students participated in an online session with Japanese teaching staff from the Tanken Centre in Sydney to practise their speaking skills. The session simulated the HSC Speaking Examination in which students participate in a 5 minute conversation about their personal world (family, leisure, future aspirations etc). This term, speaking practice sessions are held in D6:

  • Every Friday morning from 8:15am to 8:30 am
  • Week B Tuesday at recess with Yumi sensei.

All are encouraged to attend to build skills and confidence.

Interacting in Japanese and the new Modern Languages Syllabus Stage 4

One focus of the new Modern Languages Syllabus is developing skills to interact effectively in Japanese. Opportunities for authentic interactions occur in all lessons. Many Year 7 students have made an outstanding effort this term to use Japanese in familiar situations in both the classroom and during their breaks. For example, saying greetings and farewells, thank you, making polite requests and expressing opinions. It is not unusual to hear lots of Japanese being spoken when I walk through the Year 7 area.

Year 7 students enjoyed learning about the Children’s Day festival kodomo no hi. Pictured here are students wearing their origami kabuto (samurai helmets) and participating in interactive activities.

Harmony Day 2024

2024 is the Year of the Dragon. As part of Harmony Day celebrations, students had the opportunity to visit the Wellbeing Hub to create a dragon from cut outs of their hands. The hands formed the scales of the dragon.

Technology GO!!

Congratulations to the students who are consistently arriving to lessons with charged devices, ready for learning. It is important that devices are charged each evening so students have access to their Google Classroom and other language learning sites. If students are absent from a lesson, they are able to access the work on their Google Classroom.

All students learning Japanese at FGHS have access to Japanese content on Education Perfect. This learning tool is used in the classroom but is also a great tool that students can access anytime if they want to reinforce and/or extend language learned in class.
