Amazing 5/6

What have we been up to?

Starting term 2 with swimming has allowed us to reintroduce our classroom expectations and routines while giving an interesting distraction at the same time. The kids have done a good job showing responsibility and organisation, bringing all their stuff for swimming and getting ready before and after in an organised fashion. They also seem to have come back from holidays with plenty of energy, so lets hope that continues as we get deeper into the term.

This term we have a number of big events and activities going on for the students. Interschool sport will kick off in week 3 with our first matches of soccer, netball and softball. Soccer players need shin pads and a mouthguard is recommended. Le Page Primary School prides itself on our sportsmanship and how our students hold themselves and act when we compete against other schools. Any student who chooses to behave in an unsportsmanlike way may find themselves missing games or not representing their school at all. We appreciate your support and having a conversation with your child about expected behaviour.

We also have an excursion this term to support our environmental inquiry unit, so keep on the lookout for permission forms on Compass. We have the Maths Talent Quest, Prime Ministers Spelling Bee, Maths Olympiad and the girl’s soccer day. So much going on!

Looking forward in our learning:

Morpheme Magic:

The 5/6 students will be continuing our new spelling program this term, focusing on prefixes, suffixes and the bases upon which these are attached.

Literacy:

In literacy we are moving into non-fiction writing, focusing on autobiographies and the language used to inform. This will influence our reading texts and the type of pieces that the students will create in writing and will culminate in a celebration at the end of term. More on this to come!

Maths:

In maths, students will be focusing on the four mathematical operations this term, starting with addition and subtraction. We will be beginning with the focus groups next week and be spending 4 weeks on this topic.

From the Students:

This term has started off really fun because we have had swimming every day for the last two weeks. At swimming we have been learning different strokes and diving. Our favourite part was learning how to do a tumble turn. I (Matthew) am really looking forward to the last day of swimming because we get to go in the Wave pool and do a fun inflatable course.

This term in maths we have started off by looking at data and graphs. We have explored line graphs, bar graphs, pie charts, and using tally marks to record data. We used the computers to record data and transform the data into graphs using Google Sheets.

This term in 5/6A we have been reading our book club book, ‘Bridge to Terabithia’. We answer comprehension questions about the book after each chapter. We have really enjoyed reading this book so far, especially the big plot twist in chapter 11!

In 5/6 we run laps every morning and this term we are working towards running to Paris for the Olympics! Each lap equals 1 km, and we as a group need to run 16, 718 km by the end of term. So far, I (Luke) have run 78 km and our 5/6A class has run 522 km.
