Year 1/2 Cluster News

Sports Day – this Friday March 22nd

Please remember that for our duty of care for your child, parents or carers must speak to the class teacher before taking children home before the end of the day.

A printed program was sent home on Wednesday. Students arrive at classrooms at the normal time dressed in their house colour. Clothing must be sun smart e.g. t-shirts which cover shoulders, bucket hats not caps. A labelled drink bottle MUST be brought to school as the events are held on the oval. Students need their fruit snack, recess and lunch. No canteen orders will be taken tomorrow. There is a sausage sizzle available $3, drinks $2 and a cake stall.

Harmony Day – Monday March 25th

Harmony Day celebrates our school’s diverse culture and we all come together and celebrate our uniqueness. It is a casual clothes day- students can wear cultural clothing, orange clothing or cultural themed clothing. Please keep in mind that students need to run around at playtime and may need to bring a change of clothes and/or shoes for these times. Students will be doing activities with their buddies as well as in class and as a whole school.

Good Friday and Easter Monday

Good Friday 29th March and Easter Monday 1st April are Public Holidays.

A reminder that Pokemon Cards are not be at school except on Pokemon Club days, which are advertised on the whiteboard in the courtyard. A number of students continue to bring cards in bags. Could you please check your child’s bag regularly for cards and any other extra toys etc.

Take Home Books

From next week, students who are ready will have decodable books in the Take Home Folders to be read at home. Initially there will be one decodable book per student. If your child has moved on from decodable readers, this will be communicated to you. More details will be posted.

Students are able to borrow from the school library on any day of the week, if they return their books. The community library in the courtyard provides another source of books to take home. We also welcome donations of suitable books into the community library.

Cardboard

In the next few weeks, we will be using our ideas to create things and so we are in need of cardboard and other interesting materials that could spark our creativity. If you are able to help, please send items in when you can.

Home Inquiry

What 2D shapes do you see around your house e.g. what shape are your bathroom tiles? Why are they used e.g. some shapes are strong, some fit together without gaps, some look good. Do they have straight or curved sides? Are there parallel sides? Are they regular or irregular shapes?

Reading library books or home books – We encourage approximately 10-15 minutes each night.

Learning for Week 9:

Literacy:

Reader’s Workshop mini lessons: build on reading strategies taught in Foundation e.g. stretchy snake. A sheet with these strategies will be placed in Take Home Folders so they can also be referred to at home.

Writer’s Workshop mini lessons: Where do authors get their ideas? How do they (and we) record them? Which ideas can I develop into my writing?

Spelling

Each week there is a focus ‘sound of the week’. Students are introduced to groups of words which use the spelling patterns and revise the alternative spellings of vowel sounds.

The sound of the week is not intended to be a spelling list for you to teach your child at home. It is for you to be aware of what we are teaching at school and you are welcome to use the sound as a starting point for your child to share what they are learning.

Mathematics: Students begin learning about 2D shapes

Students continue to explore names and properties of 2D shapes and complete a summative assessment to be posted on Toddle. Year 2 students also use spatial terms such as opposite, parallel, curved and straight.

Unit of Inquiry:

Central Idea: Ideas allow us to think, create and express ourselves

Line of Inquiry 1: ideas as a tool for learning

Line of Inquiry 2: ways in which we discover and communicate ideas

Line of Inquiry 3: inspiration leads to creativity

Students continue to explore, record and develop ideas through reading books that challenge their understandings. This unit will develop students’ critical thinking and communication skills.

Christian Studies: Christian Beliefs

Key Idea: We explore and outline ways Christians make decisions about how to live.

Students will consider how they make decisions. They will then make a list of questions and interview Christians in the school and/or at home/church if they would like to, about how they make decisions. Finally, students will reflect on how this new information may influence their decision making.
