Summer Holiday Learning Ideas

Maths Experiences for the Summer Holidays

A big part of the Maths focus at Skye PS for 2023 has been on finding the ‘fun’ in Maths. We incorporate games and real-world experiences in our teaching and learning programs to develop content knowledge and skills.

If you are stuck for something to do on the holidays, check out some of the following ideas:

  • Games — Love Maths (great family Maths game that require minimal resources)
  • Financial Maths: grocery shopping budgets, planning an outing, Christmas list costs
  • Lego Land (estimating the number of blocks, construction, area and volume)
  • Mathletics (all you need is a device and your child's log in)
  • Summer Holiday Maths Activities from NSW Department of Education

We would love to see photos/videos of all the fun Maths experiences your families have over the summer break. Please send through either via emailing Miss Eade (hailee.eade@education.vic.gov.au) or via direct message or by tagging our school Instagram (@skye.ps).

Thanks and have a safe, happy and exciting break!

Literacy Experiences for the Summer Holidays

Getting children to do any 'schoolwork' over the holidays is always a challenge. The more it can be disguised within having fun the more success you'll have and the kids won't even realise they're learning! Check out some of these ideas:

  • Sign-up to receive updates from the Frankston Library regarding upcoming school holiday events at https://confirmsubscription.com/h/j/76E000EDC48408E
  • Visit the Melbourne Museum or Melbourne Zoo (children are FREE). Encourage your child to read the display information. They may want to go home and further research an area of interest and even create a poster, fact file, diorama or PowerPoint presentation.
  • For students in Years 3+, encourage them to keep up with current events by selecting an article of interest from the Herald Sun for Kids online newspaper: https://www.kidsnews.com.au/news. Talk about what they have read and why they selected it.
  • Play word games such as Wordle - for older children and Word Cookies (via the App Store) - for all ages. Warning these are addictive (in a really good way!).
  • Read aloud The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate then watch the movie. Talk about what was the same and what was different. Who was their favourite animal and why? Do you think it's ok to keep animals in a shopping mall

We would love to see photos/videos of all the fun experiences your families have over the summer break. Please send through either via emailing Miss Eade (hailee.eade@education.vic.gov.au) or via direct message or by tagging our school Instagram (@skye.ps).

Have a happy holiday and relaxing break!
