Grade 5 - 6
Literacy
In Reading we have been exploring the text ‘Paradise Sands’ by Levi Pinfold. This story of enchantment was Shortlisted in the 2023 Children’s Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year category. We explored plot, vocabulary, theme and the images in the text using our inferential skills to interpret clues about the deeper meaning in the text. In Writing we have finished up our unit on Narratives. Students have worked really hard on creating some marvellous stories. They have used all they have learned this year to ensure they have some fantastic beginnings, some great problems and suspense and a fabulous ending!
Numeracy
For the last 2 weeks, we have looked at geometry – the Cartesian plane and location, fractions and multiplication. Students played Battleship and went on a huge treasure hunt to consolidate their skills of graphing. We have been comparing and ordering fractions and learning the ‘area’ model of splitting numbers to assist in larger multiplication problems.
Inquiry
We are looking forward to starting inquiry, where students are going to work in groups to create a budgeted family holiday plan. This will complete our unit on Business and Economics.
Dance
Students have been perfecting their skills in dance – boogieing down to some fabulous Christmas songs! We are almost at the finished product and it looks GREAT!!!!! We can’t wait to show off our dancing skills at the End of Year concert!
CPR
This week students had a chance to learn a bit about CPR! We learned what CPR stands for and the acronym “DRSABCD” – ask your child what that means! We also learned how to position ourselves when giving CPR to adults, children and to babies.
