Grade 1

 Reading

During Reading this fortnight, students in Grade 1 have continued using a mentor text to help develop their reading skills. Students have been exploring new pages in the book each day and using the text and images to help support their comprehension skills. Students have been loving the conversations that have been happening and learning new words that they can add to their vocabulary. The mentor texts chosen have been Procedure texts to link in with our Writing focus for the remainder of this term. The mentor text we are currently reading is called “How to Wash Your Woolly Mammoth” by Michelle Robinson. Grade 1 students have enjoyed exploring and discussing the materials and method needed to wash a dirty woolly mammoth.

Writing

In our Grade 1 classrooms, we've embarked on an exciting journey into the world of procedure writing! Our young learners are delving into the structure of procedures, understanding the importance of clear titles, goals, materials, and step-by-step instructions. We've been emphasizing the significance of using dynamic verbs to make our writing vivid and engaging. Recently, the children brought their own ingredients to school to make sandwiches, allowing them to experience the process firsthand. This hands-on activity not only sparked their creativity but also laid the foundation for them to independently write procedures.

Maths

In Maths, students have been learning more about Chance. We have discussed the likelihood of an outcome happening using ‘will happen’, ‘might happen’ and ‘won’t happen’. Students particularly enjoyed using their imagination and coming up with different things that ‘won’t happen’ such as raining orange juice and a unicorn coming to school.

We have started looking at repeating and growing patterns using different numbers, shapes and colours. Students were able to continue patterns as well as create their own patterns.

Upcoming Excursion

Year 1 students will be visiting Legoland on Friday 1st December. It is essential students arrive on time on the day. We kindly ask families to pack lunchboxes and drink bottles into a small labelled bag (eg. plastic bag or swim bag). Students are required to wear full school uniform and appropriate footwear on the day.
