"I write to discover what I know." - Flannery O'Connor

2024 is a big year for the English faculty. The English faculty are very excited to be delivering new teaching units in accordance with the new 7 – 10 English syllabus. Years 7 and 9 students will undertake new studies including war poetry and a focus on adolescence through the ages, as well as the updated novel study and our collective favourite, gothic horror. In 2025, new programs will be taught to Years 8 and 10. We will also be planning for changes to the Stage 6 curriculum in 2025 so we are very busy creating high quality assessment tasks, learning activities and resources.

We welcome two passionate teachers to the faculty this year – Alysha McCann and Brittney Johnson. Both are excellent pedagogues who teach with high energy and their love of English and literature.

There are so many events that we are looking forward to in 2024: the Year 10 Romeo and Juliet excursion was such a hit last year that we are going again. This excursion will consolidate learning around the transformation of Shakespeare from play to film for the unit in Term 3. Many students have not seen a play performed in a theatre, so this excursion is quite a treat.

Last year the inaugural English faculty writing competition saw many students submit engaging imaginative responses around the idea of bravery, and we hope to see even more submissions as the prize money is BIG! We have had so many great suggestions for this year’s topic, it will be hard to choose.

If you would like more information about what your child is learning in English this year, please ask to see the 2024 English Assessment Booklet. All students have access to this in digital form and it contains all assessment tasks, marking criteria, due dates and planning sheets.
