STEAM, 2023! That's a wrap!

Year 3/4

After a year of learning, curiosity, excitement and empowering students, STEAM finished with the Year 3/4 Claymation Film Festival! Where we were joined by the Federal Member for Goldstein, Ms. Zoe Daniel.

Students worked tirelessly during Semester II to research film making techniques, write scripts (in-line with their Big Question), create Claymation characters, backgrounds, and master TWO new iPad Apps! Just incredible.

Various studies into the benefits of STEAM education state that it helps to promote critical and creative thinking, persistence, decision making and leadership. This was all evident throughout the process and students continued to develop those micro-skills that help with creating self-regulated learners.

Once again thank you to Heather Britton for all your expertise. Thank you also to Steph and Fraser for all your help on the day.

Year 1/2

Year 1/2 students immersed themselves into their Big Question, 'What is it Made of and Why?'

This Big Question focused on the Science, and Design and Technology curriculum areas from the Victorian Curriculum.  Two of the key understandings were that products can be reused, and we can all reduce waste.

Students were able to use various materials from the STEAM Room to create a bookmark, dream catcher or a necklace/bracelet.

Here are some reusing tips that you could share with your child at home:

  • Turn old jars into storage containers.
  • Use plastic bottles as planters.
  • Make paper mache bowls out of old newspapers.
  • Create art out of your old bottle caps and aluminium cans.
  • Use old clothes to make rags for cleaning.
  • Use egg cartons to start seedlings.
  • Make a bird feeder out of a plastic bottle.
  • Use glass bottles as vases for flowers.
  • Create a compost bin for food scraps and yard waste.

Whist it was a fabulous year, watch out for next year - we are going BIGGER and BETTER! Science doesn't sleep...
