Secondary

Dear Families

Our 2024 Student Representative Council made an impressive start to their tenure in leading and representing Secondary students this week. At their leadership development day Monday, the SRC worked collaboratively to establish a vision that is ambitious, authentic, in keeping with the spirit of the College founders and in alignment with the College Mission Statement to be people of competence, conscience and compassion who are committed to God and the service of others.

2024 College Captains, Evie and Wim launched the vision at yesterday’s assembly and outlined to students their leadership aspirations for the year ahead:

2024 Student Representative Vision Statement

To strive to be authentic in our actions and purposeful with our commitments, to promote an inclusive and collaborative College Community.

As Evie and Wim outlined …

In order to achieve this vision, the SRC strives to be accessible and approachable to both students and staff. We will make the commitment to be servant leaders, visiting Homerooms, actively engaging in various Year Groups activities and being available and approachable for students. We understand that leadership is not about wearing a badge, but rather the actions and words to serve others.

We will strive to be action-oriented, and work to make a lasting impact on the College. Our first mission next week will be to work with student leaders from Years 7 to 10, gathering ideas and seeking support from the student leadership to enact real change.

We will endeavour to make John XXIII College a place where everyone feels like they belong to something greater. We should celebrate our individual giftedness, and understand that whilst we are different in personality, in spirit we are one – bound by the knowledge we are students of John XXIII College.

Finally, we will serve to be the student voice. We encourage dialogue between year groups and feedback on how we can help our students get the most out of their time at John XXIII College.

We commend Evie, Wim and the 2024 Student Representative Council for their commitment to this vision and their authentic, inclusive leadership of their peers next year. Thank you to Mr Andrew Osnain for his coordination of the leadership day, to Mr Daniel Mahon for facilitating a workshop on the day and to the staff coordinators who will work closely with each student leader as a mentor throughout next year.

Congratulations to our Magis students who demonstrated great passion and knowledge at their Personal Projects Exhibition yesterday. Also, to Year 10 Drama students for their performances at Tuesday’s Drama Night.

Year 9 Outdoor Education Camp

The Year 9 Outdoor Education Camp ran last Monday and Tuesday 14 November, and was a great success. Students visited Rottnest Island and Yanchep Lagoon to experience the amazing water environment of each location.

Below are some reflections from students involved in the camp:

The Year 9 Outdoor Education camp was a fun time to socialise with friends and people you wouldn’t normally approach in a different environment. I would recommend camp for students because of the freedom outside of the classroom as well as the fun structured activities. On Monday, our group went to Rottnest Island to snorkel at the Basin and explore the island by bike. The weather provided some challenges, but lunch at the bakery made up for that! When we headed back to camp, we set up our tents and prepared to cook our student-prepared dinner on the trangia stoves in groups. The next day our group went on the bus to Yanchep Lagoon where we had the opportunity to play some beach games, team building activities and snorkelling. Overall, the camp was a great experience, and a lot of fun was had by all. Amina Fowers, Year 9 Loreto

Outdoor Education Camp was a great experience for all who participated. It involved activities that helped build relationships, experience personal growth in an outdoor setting and demonstrate skills that were learnt during our school lessons. My friends and I have learnt that we are now pros at setting up tents and can cook an awesome meal on the trangia stoves (given that you brought the right food). Overall, I’d definitely say that Year 9 Outdoor Education Camp was a highlight of my year so far and hopefully students in coming years will find it just as enjoyable as we did. Year 10 Outdoor Education Expedition

Last week, this semester's Year 10 Outdoor Education students enjoyed a wonderful camping experience in the Margaret River region. Over the four-day expedition, students were afforded the opportunity to be challenged in a variety of aspects including collaboration, organisation, resilience, fear management, camping craft, minimal impact techniques and adventure skills. The main aim of this expedition is to provide an environment in which students are able to gain an appreciation for the outdoors and face a variety of challenging experiences in order to grow. Our students all have their own special gems to utilise now when facing future challenges and know the value of creating and facing challenging opportunities that may present themselves in future in the interest of improving their own self-esteem and quality of life.

A huge thank you to the professional staff from Outdoor Education Group that assisted us with our adventure activities whilst on camp. These adventure activities included: an abseil into WI16 Cave; hiking the Cape-to-Cape track into and around Boranup forest; and, a High Ropes Course at OEG HQ. Of course, our College staff are always very supportive of events such as this and those attending the expedition were once again amazing and thoroughly enjoyed their time with the students. Our huge appreciation goes to: Angie Bollam, Conor O’Hara, Lauren Murphy, Adam Read and Doug Watson for their efforts in making this camp such a successful one.

Big thanks to all involved!

A manga paints a thousand words

Over the past term our Year 7 students studying Japanese  have written, illustrated and bound a Japanese manga about the daily routine of one of their own favourite anime characters. During the week the Year 7s visited our Primary Japanese classes and read their wonderful manga.

Our Year 7 students really enjoyed the experience and were impressed with the Primary student's understanding of Japanese.

These images, like our manga, paint a thousand words.

A big thank you to Rowson Sensei and our Year 3 and Year 5 Japanese classes for this wonderful opportunity.

Thank you to Glass Sensei for preparing the Year 7 Japanese students with the creation, production and delivery of this culturally enriching task.
