Swimming!

What a wonderful week of swimming! The swimming program is a valuable part of the Physical Education curriculum at school. The aim is that by the end of primary school, it is anticipated that students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills identified in the Victorian Water Safety Certificate.

The certificate is awarded when a student can:

  • swim 50 metres continuously
  • answer water safety-based questions
  • perform simple rescues.

It is important for students to learn basic swimming skills, but it is also a chance for students to develop their independence. The students were able to look after their personal belongings and to manage drying, changing and dressing themselves.

Here are some verbal reflections from our Grade 1/2 students about swimming:

At swimming I enjoyed …

Ellery FKJ - swimming freestyle and being flipped out of the boat.

Hannah FKJ - when we got flipped out of the boat.

Chloe FKJ - going on the floating boat.

Rosha FKJ - when we went on the boat and we were flipped over.

Charlie 1PT – the game that we played with my group.

Celina 1PT – learning how to do freestyle.

Cathy 1PT– jumping into the water but it was really scary.

Olivia 2LP - doing diving with my swimming group!

Lennox 2LP - doing a diving torpedo underwater!

Jasper 2LP  – doing backstroke!

Zoe 2MC -  playing with the sinkies.

Liam 2MC - doing a torpedo.

Domenico 2MC - doing freestyle.

During the swimming lesson I learnt ….

Tida FKJ - to call out for someone if you need help.

Dakota FKJ - how to swim doggy paddle.

Rayan FKJ - to not go into deep water.

Envie 1PT – how to do the doggy paddle and torpedo

Ruby 1PT – how to do a new kick while swimming on my back.

Hana 1PT – that it's better to have goggles on when you are swimming in the water.

Eric 2LP – to put your head under the water and how to breathe under water.

Aaryan 2LP – how to swim with a kickboard.

Sai 2LP – how to practice freestyle.

Gavin 2MC - how to breathe.

It is important to learn to swim ….

Heather FKJ - because if you get stuck you can swim to shore.

Alicia FKJ - because you might drown.

Mia FKJ - so that we don't drown.

Xu Dong 1PT – so that you can have fun in the water and not sink.

Zen 1PT – because when you are in a problem, you will be able to survive.

George 1PT  – so that you don’t drown.

Alanna 2LP – because if you are out swimming and if there’s a current or something you could get into trouble and so this teaches you how to get back to shore safely!

Jasmine 2MC - because it is a survival skill.

Arthur 2MC - because if you are on a boat and it crashes, you can just swim.
