From the 5/6 Classrooms

This term we have been having a great time studying poetry, continuing our Environment work during KGT (see Environment page), swimming and completing all our final pieces of work for the year.

Grade 5 Literacy

Poetry and story

Grade 5 and 6 students have loved their study of poetry this term.

We have been studying Australian Bush Ballads and the link to landscapes and animals.  We have also been extending our study of character, settings and plots as we have investigated poems that tell a story. These have included great Australian classics such as Waltzing Matilda, Clancy of the Overflow and Mulga Bill's Bicycle.

We are now working on taking our poetry "From the page to the STAGE!". We are planning to recite and perform our poems as classes, groups and as individuals. We are very excited about the students who have put their hands up to take leading roles, those who would like to create props and those working on sound and movement.  We will encourage performances of these poems in settings that include - performances for other year levels and /or during the Talent Show and in assembly.

We have also analysed similarities and differences between characters, settings and plots in our Book Club Groups.

GRADE  6 MATHS

Grade 6 Food Truck Project

Over the past couple of weeks, our classrooms have been buzzing with creativity and mathematical thinking as we’ve embarked on an exciting Food Truck Project. This hands-on activity integrates real-world applications of maths, encouraging students to engage deeply with concepts of area, percentages, data analysis, and financial literacy.

We began by exploring a map of the Queen Victoria Market, where students calculated the area of different spaces and determined the percentages of various land uses. This helped them understand how space is allocated in a real-world context.

Next, the students surveyed their classmates to discover what types of food would be most popular from food trucks. The data they collected was presented in a range of graph types, such as bar graphs and pie charts, which they analyzed to identify trends and preferences.

With a winning cuisine selected, students then explored recipes for their chosen meal, calculating the quantities of ingredients needed. From there, they worked out the costs of preparing their meals and the potential profit their food truck could make—a fantastic introduction to budgeting and entrepreneurial skills!

Looking ahead, we will begin the design and construction phase of our food trucks. This part of the project will focus on shapes and volume as students create models of their trucks, applying their understanding of geometry to design efficient and visually appealing structures.

This project has been a wonderful way for students to see how maths connects to the real world while fostering teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills. We can’t wait to share their final food truck designs with you!
