Year 7 Science Excursion to Perth Zoo

On Friday, 1 November, our Year 7 students had an extraordinary day of hands-on learning at Perth Zoo, where classroom concepts sprang to life. This excursion perfectly complemented the students’ current studies on classification and taxonomy in Science.

Students took part in an engaging presentation called "Fantastic Beasts and How to Classify Them," where students observed various species up close and personal. The presentation proved especially impactful, as students learned about Perth Zoo's endangered species too. Many students learned about the story of the Western Swamp Tortoise recovery program and the efforts of the many involved in conserving this endangered animal.

Working in small groups, students also completed a booklet on different animals, learning how to classify them, finding information on their diet, the threats to their survival as well as many interesting facts.

It was so wonderful to see all the students so engaged with real-world applications of our Science curriculum and the many questions and observations made showed a deeper level of critical thinking than what can be achieved in the classroom.

A special thanks goes out to the Perth Zoo's education team, all the staff who attended and our parent volunteers who helped make this valuable learning experience possible.
