What’s happening in English

In the words of philosopher Henry David Thoreau, “follow your conscience and break the law on moral grounds, rather than be a cog in an unjust system.”

This term our Year 11 students have studied the Greek tragedy – ‘Antigone’. Students have been grappling with the broader implications of moral questions such as civil disobedience, human rights and gender equality.

As part of their analysis, students worked collaboratively to construct a visual diagram illustrating the connections between characters.

The students have also engaged in a class discussion regarding whether civil disobedience is a justified response to unjust laws.

Please see an excerpt from a student response on the issue of civil disobedience:

“Civil disobedience is a suitable response to unjust laws, which is especially evident in Antigone. When government systems violate rights and promote inequality, this keeps cruel treatment in place. Historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr demonstrated that having peaceful speeches and protests can help educate and create awareness leading to change.”
