Student Leadership

Remembrance Day

On the 11th of November, most of the Year Six leaders (Ashleigh, Guy, Brodie and Jedd) went to the Crib Point Cenotaph for Remembrance day. When we arrived, there were many different schools from the Peninsula attending the service.

Firstly, we listened to the committee members speak. Their speeches were beautifully presented to the community and were well read and received. Then Bittern’s Year Six leaders went up to present the poem.

The Inquisitive Mind of a Child

“Why are they selling poppies, Mummy?”

“Selling poppies in town today.”

“The poppies, child, are flowers of love.”

“For the men who marched away.”

“But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy?”“Why not a beautiful rose?”

“Because my child, men fought and died,

“In the fields where the poppies grow.”

“But why are the poppies so red, Mummy?”

“Why are the poppies so red?”

“Red is the colour of blood, my child.”

“The blood that the soldiers shed.”

“But why, Mummy, are you crying so?”

“Your tears are giving you pain.”

“My tears are my fears for you, my child.”

“For the World is forgetting again.”

Upon completion all of the attendees laid their wreaths, and the service was complete. We were invited back to the RSL for refreshments, but we had to go back to school.

Thank you to Jemima and Miss Bacon for driving us to and from the RSL service, and a thank you to Mrs Herbert for making the event happen.

It was an amazing day.
