First Nations Art Workshop

By Maggie T & Galnya

On Thursday 14th November, First Nations students from grade 5/6 had the opportunity to go on an excursion to the Spacecraft Art Studio in Footscray. This was following the art workshop at school where we worked with First Nations artist and ex TPS student, Peter Hood to develop some designs for the new school build.

We went on a bus to Spacecraft studio, we were so excited to get to try some screen printing! When we arrived we got to go upstairs and look at all the art being sold in the studio. After we looked around, Uncle Peter showed us all the different colours and all the different screens that we could use to screen print with. All the screens had pieces of art that we made on them!

We got shown how to use the screens and we got partnered up to have a go at screen printing. They gave us a lot of time to play with different screens, different designs and different colours to see what we could make.

After a while, we got to have some morning tea that Spacecraft had made for us! It was yummy and delicious!

Our last activity was screen printing on bags that we got to take home! We could choose what colour and what design we wanted and then worked with a partner to make them. Some people made a t-shirt for Uncle Peter with one of our designs on it!

It was so fun and exciting and at the end of the day we were pretty tired. It was cool that we got to try a new type of art!

Yossi says, “I thought it was very cool and it would have been good if we had more time to do our bags!”

Kadel says, “I think it was nice and it was fun and the morning tea was delicious”.

Zannie says, “I really enjoyed it, my favourite part was being able to put a design on the bags and take it home!”

Bon says, “My favourite part was when we got to print on the bags because we got to choose what screen we wanted to use and put the ‘Thornbury Primary School’ logo on it and it was really fun!”
