What's Happening in the Senior School

Year 5

What’s Happening in Year 5 in Weeks 5 and 6

Our Year 5 students had a great time at Interschool Sports on Friday. We had feedback on their resilience and fairness which makes for an excellent start to the year. Our brain break fruit and veg snack is running well and students are generally remembering to charge their laptops at home. Well done!

Wellbeing

Year 5 students will complete 4R ( Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships) Wellbeing lessons. We will be exploring emotional literacy which includes students learning to describe different ways to express emotions and the relationship between emotions and behaviour. Students will also discuss factors that influence how people interact.

Literacy

Students will deepen their comprehension skills and be exposed to high level vocabulary while listening to the audio of ‘War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo. This beautifully written story recounts the experiences of Joey, a horse purchased by the Army for service in World War I and the attempts of young Albert, his previous owner, to bring him safely home. Students have been looking at Narrative writing for the first four weeks of school in preparation for NAPLAN. They have been encouraged to use a story graph which includes characters, settings, problems and a resolution. They are encouraged to use onomatopoeia, descriptive details, powerful verbs, adverbials and paired adjectives to engage their readers. Additionally, they will hone their grammar and spelling skills by answering past NAPLAN questions.

Maths

Year 5 students will be developing a stronger understanding of the mathematical concepts of decimals (interpret, compare and order numbers with more than 2 decimal places) and time (compare 12- and 24-hour time systems). There will also be NAPLAN preparation where we address misconceptions and common errors.

Knowledge Unit

In our History Knowledge Unit, we will begin to understand the impact the discovery of gold had on the indigenous people of Australia and then look at the treatment of the Chinese people in Australia during the Gold Rush.

Homework

Students will start bringing home books from our class library to continue to develop their reading skills. They will also shortly start receiving Mathletics tasks to strengthen their mathematical knowledge.

Reminders

Year 6

What’s Happening in Year 6 in Weeks 5 and 6

Our Year 6 students had an incredible time on camp in the beautiful Peninsula! From exciting outdoor challenges in open water to team-building activities, they made memories that will last a lifetime. The students embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, courage, and great teamwork. The breath taking scenery and beautiful weather only added to the adventure. What an amazing way to start the year off.

Wellbeing

Year 6 students will complete the 4Rs ( Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships) Wellbeing lessons, learning valuable strategies to problem-solve in relationships and peer connections. By practicing these skills, they develop the confidence to handle social challenges independently and responsibly.

Literacy

Students will continue reading the Us Mob book, engaging in literacy tasks that deepen their understanding and comprehension. Additionally, they will focus on strengthening their grammar skills and improving their handwriting through regular practice.

Maths

Year 6 students will explore prime, composite, square, and triangular numbers, developing a strong understanding of these key mathematical concepts. They will then apply their knowledge to solve problems involving these types of numbers. Following this, students will focus on mastering operations and the correct order of operations to ensure accuracy in more complex calculations.

Knowledge Unit

For our Knowledge Unit - History, Year 6 students will explore the history of people's rights, with a particular focus on women's rights and Indigenous rights. They will examine key events and movements that shaped the fight for equality and justice throughout history.

Homework

Students are expected to read for a minimum of 15-30 minutes, five times a week, to improve their reading skills. Additionally, they will receive Mathletics tasks every fortnight to reinforce and build on their mathematical knowledge. Please find a list of book suggestions for Year 6 students below.
