Performing Arts 5/6

We have been learning how to play kuleles and have been learning different parts of them like… 

The head, the tuning pegs, the nut, the neck, the body and the soundhole. 

These are all the parts of a ukulele.

Chords

Over the past 3 lessons we have learned 3 chords.

First the C chord - it was a fun lesson.  

Then we learned the Am chord and we learned a song called Hay Ho.

After that we learned the F chord. 

We had to use two fingers at once and we learned the beginner version of Thunder by Imagine Dragons.

That was all the chords we used with the past lessons.

I am excited to learn more chords and learn more songs with the ukulele.

Senior School

Performing Arts in term 3 has been very exciting with the arrival of a number of new instruments thanks to a special funding grant from the State Government’s Music and Me programme. Instruments and tools include ukuleles, hand drums, chime bars, shakers, bells, a glockenspiel and a parachute.

Students in grades 3/4 and 5/6 have all been learning the ukulele and it has been incredible to see how enthusiastic and capable students are at picking up a new instrument.

Songs we have learned so far include “Lime in the Coconut”, “Row, row, row the boat”, “Ho Hey” and “Thunder”.

If your children have access to a ukulele and would like to practice at home, please support them to tune their instrument before they play. There are a number of free apps that can support you such as: Ukebuddy (https://ukebuddy.com/ukulele-tuner). The most important element is for them to use the GCEA tuning - which we remember using Goats Can Eat Anything!

Junior School

In Junior School, we have been experimenting with the parachute and creating a choreography to the song “Sarà perchè ti amo” by “Ricchi e Poveri”. Over the last few weeks we have been exploring group dynamics, using the music to help guide us with our choreography and using the colours of the parachute to create a game. The parachute has a magical quality that naturally embeds concepts such as teamwork, respect, music and fun and we can’t seem to get enough of it!
