BOOK WEEK 2026
Next week is Book Week.
We will be adding some extra excitement to the week by exploring books and reading.
On Thursday August 27th, we will be holding a parade after roll call on the oval to showcase some of your children’s favourite books and book characters.
If you have a student who loves to dress up, let them create a costume that relates to one of their favourite book characters. Some children might like to choose just a couple of distinguishing features of the book character to wear and carry the (named) book with them. If they don’t bring the book or dress up, why not have them draw or photocopy the front cover of a favourite book and carry that during the parade.
I hear murmurings among the teachers as they choose their costumes for the parade, which parents and carers are invited to attend. If it does rain, we will have to divide up into year levels and use indoor spaces.
During Library classes, we will find out the Winners and Honour books for the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year awards. We will compare these winners with those of the Shadow judges (School students who volunteered to read a section of shortlisted books and judge for the CBCA) and our own Wales Street choices.
This year’s Library class activity will involve students thinking about a book they have read in the last year or two that they would recommend to a classmate. Consider discussing this with them over the weekend, writing it down and slipping the note into their Library bag.
With the musical theme this year, the library will be turning into a record store for the rest of this term as we create a record of our recommendations of a great book to read. You are welcome to pop in after Book Week to see what we have created.
VICTORIAN PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE 2026
The closing date for the reading challenge is Friday September 4 this year, but I would love a couple of days to make sure everything is in order, so please try and have all titles added to your Dashboard by September 1st.
