Netball

St Mary’s had four teams competing in the Netball NSW Cup at Armidale last week. Usually, we would compete in the round hosted by Narrabri but a clash of dates resulted in us going to Armidale to play this year. The change had some benefits as there were many more teams at Armidale than Narrabri with teams from Uralla Central School, Armidale Secondary College, Inverell High School, New England Girls School and O’Connor Catholic College Armidale.

St Mary’s had teams in the 7/8 Girls, 7/8 Boys, 9/10 Boys and 9/10 Girls competing to try and qualify for the regional finals at Tamworth in the last week of this term with the top two teams going through. The Year 7/8 Girls went through the day undefeated playing exciting netball throughout the day. The Year 7/8 Boys improved enormously throughout the day to finish runners-up and qualify for the regional final. The Year 9/10 Girls finished a close second in their pool and then lost narrowly in their final to the winner of the other pool. The Year 9/10 Boys played entertaining netball throughout the day and had some great wins along the way but too many close losses meant they missed the finals.

The most pleasing aspect of the day was the high standard of competition and our teams were right in the mix in all divisions. After weeks of training on the school courts the Armidale courts posed some challenges to the boys in particular but they quickly adapted to the different courts.

Thanks to our team managers Miss Brooks, Miss Stanley, Mr Kennedy and Mr Carlyon and a huge thanks to Meysades Sullivan and Lily Maxwell who did a great job umpiring throughout the day. Without our umpires we would not have been able to play and it’s often a thankless job.

House Sports

Over 200 people participated in last week’s lunchtime sport with soccer at the Oval. This week will see the finals for soccer with the Opens on Wednesday & the Juniors on Friday.

The latest points update for the House Lunchtime Sport competition is Lourdes 373, Mercy 737, Loreto 801 & McAuley 813.

With just 2 weeks left it looks like a battle between McAuley & Loreto for the John Lennan Trophy this year.
