Camp News

In Week 8, 75 excited (and some slightly nervous) students, teachers and parent helpers caught the train to go to the CYC City Camp.  Their itinerary is extremely full and it should be a wonderful time of new experiences and much learning. Their teachers have done a great deal of preparation with these students prior to camp.

The Year 1/2 Dinner was also held this week, along with the Year 2 Sleepover. Students participated in the 1/2 Activity Day on Friday.  A very big week in Primary!

Book Week

Book Week was celebrate in Week 7, starting off with a really well attended Reading Hour. Over 170 students and adults attended to read books, watch a Puppet Play and drink hot chocolate.

The Book Character Parade was a great time when students and teachers dressed up.  Certificates were given to some students for the effort and creativity that had been put into their costumes.  Over the week, clues were given as to what book the teachers were going to dress up from and the first people to solve the puzzle were:

Year 5/6 - Mikayla Shelling

Year 3/4 - Ryan Slater

P-Year 2 - Dexter McKee

Book Week Writing Competition

In the lead-up to Book Week, a writing competition was held and the teachers were really impressed by the number of students who entered the competition and the quality of their writing. It was a difficult task for the judges and quite a few students received ‘Highly Commended’ certificates. The students who received the Writing Competition Medals were:

Prep - Charlotte Osborne

Year 1/2 - Chloe Batey

Year 3/4 - Michael Chabvonga

Year 5/6  - Portia McDermott

Father’s Day Stall

Thank you to the Bayside Family Network for organising the Father’s Day Stall on Wednesday 30th August.  There was quite a range of gifts available for students to choose from as they made their purchases to spoil their dads. The help from some parents with the set-up of the stall was much appreciated and the student helpers on the day did a great job serving the students.

Year 3/4 Celebration of Recorders

The Year 3/4 students have been learning recorder this term and will share their new skills at 3:00pm outside the LOTE room on Wednesday 13th September, weather permitting.  If you arrive early for pick-up, it is hoped that you will enjoy listening to them.

Class Carers’ Holiday Catch-up

On Monday 2nd October, the Class Carers’ have organised a Holiday Catch-up at Ballam Park.  It will be for all primary school families from 10am to 12 noon.  Parents are responsible for the supervision of their own children at the catch-up.  Hopefully it will be a lovely sunny day.

Sunhats

A reminder that College sunhats are compulsory for all outdoor activities in Term 4, so please make sure that students have sunhats ready for the beginning of the new term.

God Bless,

Book Week Wrap Up

Book Week started off with our Reading Hour held on Monday night. 185 people attended, mostly wearing PJs. Students enjoyed hot chocolates, a puppet show and the opportunity to share some favourite books with their families. $180 was raised on the night for the Fiji Book drive.

Our own Mr Svigos was our guest author speaker on Wednesday. A small group of students were enthralled by his stories and illustrations and were left wanting more.

On Friday at the Book Week Parade, we saw many colourful costumes worn by both students and staff. The Hungry Caterpillar and Beautiful Butterfly were our MCs for a wonderful morning.

For the remainder of the day, the students participated in  multi-aged groups for Book Rotations. These activities were based on two CBCA shortlisted books: Bev & Kev by Katrina Germein and Jigsaw by Bob Graham.

Seeking Paper Towel Rolls

Primary Art is collecting paper towel rolls for next term. Any contributions will be much appreciated. Please hand in to class teacher to pass on to the Art department. Thank you!

Bayside Raiders Summer 23/24

Prep/Year 1 (Under 8)

It is now time to register your child for the basketball summer season! The Bayside Raiders are hoping to have another Prep/Grade 1 team (under 8s), as we had a number of enquiries from parents. If you are interested in your child playing basketball, please let us know, so we can plan accordingly. This could be a mixed team with boys and girls, depending on the numbers.

Year 7 in 2024 (Under 14)

We have also got a few players (both boys and girls) interested who are going into Year 7 next year. If your child is new to the school, or you know of someone who will start at Bayside in 2024, please also get in touch, as playing in the team already goes a long way towards making new friends!

1/2J Highlights

Creative juices were flowing this week with many class entries for the writing competition. It is encouraging to see the maturity of the students writing develop. Some of the criteria we have been concentrating in class are …grammatical structures in sentences, matching organisation to purpose of the text genre, adhering to boundary punctuation, phonetically plausible strategies to decipher and spell ambitious vocabulary, and accurate and consistent handwriting. Well done to all who took part, your stories were fabulous!

We ventured over to the North Campus to see the new farm additions to the Bayside community and fed the goats and listened to the bleating of the lambs.

Book Week is always a highlight in the school calendar and this one didn’t disappoint. A seamless day with some innovative costumes and book characters as you can see from the photos!

5/6W News

In Digital Technology this term, Years 5 and 6 students are learning about coding. We have built robots out of Lego and are learning how to create code to program them to achieve different challenges like bouncing back off a wall and drawing 2D shapes. We are learning to identify all the small steps that, when combined, create the bigger journey. It has been fun to anticipate obstacles, find creative shortcuts and add extra details in our coding to improve the performance of our robots.
