News from the lab

Over the last few weeks, the Year 3,4,5 & 6 students have been extremely busy learning about the states of matter (solids, liquids, and gases). Students have been learning about the observable properties of solids, liquids, and gases and how heating or cooling can cause a change in state. Check out some of the interesting things that we have done…

Year 5&6

Observed the properties of a range of different liquids and then made a liquid density tower.

Observed the properties of a range of different solids e.g., sponge, pipe cleaner, rubber band, wood, flour and rice to see how solids can be squishy, flexible, stretchy, hard, etc.

Observed the properties of gases through a series of demonstrations and then conducting our own investigation. We investigated if gases take up space by putting a cup containing paper into a bowl of water to see if it gets wet.

Exploring non-Newtonian liquids by making Oobleck.

Year 3&4

Explored the concept of melting and melting points through heating butter, cheese, ice-cream, ice, and aluminium foil to see if they melt. We also explored freezing by looking at water, vinegar, milk, oil, and honey after the following periods of time before the freezer, 2 hours in the freezer, and 4 hours in the freezer.

Explored the concept of evaporation by conducting an investigation by observing two jars of water (one with a lid and one without a lid) over a period of time to see how the water levels change.

Explored the concept of condensation by investigating to see if the condensation (water) comes from inside or outside of the jar.
