One of my favourite times of the year - every year - since I was a primary student myself, has always without a doubt been Book Week.
For those who may not be aware of the history of this event, every year since 1945 the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has brought children and books together across Australia through Children's Book Week®. During this time schools spend the week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. Awards are given by the CBCA to those authors and illustrators who are promoting quality literature for young Australians, by Australians.
This week once again saw Karoo Primary School burst with energy as it hosted the much-anticipated Book Parade. From the smallest Foundation students to the seasoned Year 6 veterans, the entire school community came alive to celebrate the enchanting world of storytelling.
As the student began arriving and the morning unfolded, it wasn't just a celebration of literature, but also a testament to the power of imagination. The creativity and enthusiasm on display painted a vivid picture of how stories can unite and inspire, regardless of age or background. It provided a launching pad for conversation around themes, plot lines and characters, and to the human connection that literature provides us.
But it wasn't just the students who took centre stage. The teachers in true Karoo spirit enthusiastically embraced the spirit of the event. It was a sight to behold as they, too, donned costumes and stepped into the shoes of beloved characters - I'm not sure who was enjoying the day more - the students or the teachers!
To continue the celebrations, students later in the week were also treated to the Beauty and the Beast performance by Alpha Productions. I have read some raving reviews of the the show this week as students reflect on the experience and the impact that live storytelling can have on an audience!
If you would like to learn more about the awards or look over the shortlisted books for this year, please head to https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2023. You may like to look for some of these titles in our school or local library, or have a browse at your bookshop these upcoming school holidays!
Happy reading, and to all those fathers and special friends within our Karoo community, have a wonderful Father's Day this weekend.
See you around the school,
