Year 4–6 House Athletics Carnival – A Fantastic Day of Spirit and Sportsmanship
Willinda Park was buzzing with excitement on Thursday 26th February as Hazel Glen College descended on it and our Year 4–6 students took to the field for the annual House Athletics Carnival. The day was a wonderful celebration of teamwork, perseverance and school pride, with students proudly demonstrating our college values both on and off the track.
From the very first event, it was clear that the focus of the day extended beyond competition. Students displayed outstanding sportsmanship, encouraging their peers, showing resilience in their events and demonstrating respect for fellow competitors. Whether sprinting down the track, leaping over hurdles, or giving their all in field events, every student embodied the positive spirit that makes Hazel Glen College such a special community.
A highlight of the day was the incredible mass participation across all year levels. It was fantastic to see so many students stepping outside their comfort zones and getting involved in a wide range of events. From long jump to shot put and everything else in between, there was something for everyone. Participation and effort were just as celebrated as podium finishes.
Adding to the vibrant atmosphere was the sea of house colours across the oval. Staff and students enthusiastically dressed up to represent their houses, creating a colourful and energetic carnival environment. The cheering squads were loud, proud and full of encouragement, reminding us that house spirit plays a big role in making the day so memorable.
We were also fortunate to have the support of our dedicated secondary student helpers. Their leadership, organisation and encouragement ensured events ran smoothly and helped our primary students feel supported throughout the day. It was wonderful to see the strong sense of connection across year levels within our College community.
Throughout the carnival, students competed not only for personal bests but also for valuable house points. Every ribbon, every participation point and every cheer contributed to the overall tally. The excitement is building as the final scores are calculated, and we look forward to announcing the winning house at our upcoming assembly.
A huge congratulations to all Year 4–6 students for their enthusiasm, effort and positive attitude. The House Athletics Carnival was a fantastic reflection of Hazel Glen College’s spirit, showcasing determination, teamwork and pride in our community.
House Assembly
Last Friday, we held our first House Assemblies for 2026! This year, we are focusing on boosting house spirit and strengthening connections within our houses.
On Friday, our House Leaders and Captains met with their Houses to learn about their house patrons, practise their chant, understand how to work collaboratively and respectfully as a House, and build important connections. An important update was also shared about house points, including which House is currently in the lead with the most points this term.
Houses also celebrated students who are leading their House in points by demonstrating expected behaviours and receiving positive Chronicles, which contribute to House points.
The winning House at the end of the term will be able to wear their House colours on a designated day in the final week of school and will receive an icy pole. We will also recognise the students in each House with the highest individual House points with a special lunch alongside our House Leaders and Primary Years Leadership Team. Congratulations to Syra from 4A, Mia from 3C and Lachlan from 3C who are our current top house point recipients. We are excited to see who our top students are at the end of the term.
It was wonderful to see our Houses come together on Friday to build connections and excitement for the year ahead. We look forward to welcoming parents to attend our House Assemblies later in the year.
Learning in Year 1
Our Year 1 students are fully immersed in the Little Learners Love Literacy program and are making fantastic progress. Each day, they are developing their phonics knowledge, strengthening their reading and spelling skills, and growing in confidence with the Little Learners routines. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm, engagement, and pride as they explore new sounds, words, and strategies to support their literacy journey.
In Maths, students have been learning about place value and how numbers are made up of tens and ones. We’ve also been practising counting to 120 and learning how counting by tens can help us find answers faster and work more efficiently. We are so proud of how much everyone is growing in their learning!
District Swimming
On Wednesday 25th February, 21 students from Hazel Glen College proudly represented the College at the District Swimming Carnival, demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship, determination and school spirit. It was a fantastic day of competition, with our swimmers embodying the College values both in and out of the pool. Students showed resilience as they pushed themselves in every race, respect towards officials and fellow competitors, and integrity in the way they conducted themselves throughout the event. Their encouragement of one another and positive attitudes were a true reflection of what it means to be part of the Hazel Glen community.
Our team achieved remarkable success across a range of events, consistently finishing strongly and competing with confidence. Many personal best performances were recorded on the day.
We are thrilled to announce that 13 Hazel Glen College students have qualified for the Division Swimming Championships. This is an outstanding achievement and a testament to their hard work and commitment. This is a significant accomplishment, and we congratulate each of these students on progressing to the next level of competition.
We thank all students who participated for representing the College with pride, as well as the staff and parents who supported and supervised on the day. We wish our qualifying swimmers the very best as they prepare to compete at the Division level. Well done, Team Hazel Glen!
PY Student Leadership Academy
Student Leadership Academy (SLA) is a program that provides students with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and contribute positively to our College community. Being part of SLA means demonstrating our College Values, having a positive attitude and being a responsible role model for students.
Throughout our sessions, we learn different leadership skills and what it truly means to be a leader - showing respect, communicating effectively, taking initiative and supporting others. During sessions, we participate in engaging activities such as collaborative challenges and quizzes, which help us build teamwork, communication and problem solving skills. We also have opportunities to support school clubs and special events, allowing us to give back to our school community. SLA encourages us to lead by example both inside and outside of the classroom. As student leaders, we are expected to model positive behaviour, display kindness and represent our school with pride.
One of the highlights of SLA is receiving our leadership badge at our Year Level Assembly. Wearing this badge is a reminder of the responsibility we have as leaders within our school. SLA is about growing into confident, respectful and proactive leaders.
Prep Italian
Our Prep Italian students have brought a splash of colour and culture to College life this term as they celebrated Carnevale in true Italian style. After learning about the tradition of tossing coriandoli (confetti) and discovering delicious traditional sweets, students crafted their own vibrant masks and proudly marched in a parade. The Preps also learned how to make and say the Italian vowels, using dough to create the letters, just like making pasta!
With creativity, music, curiosity, and plenty of smiles, the Preps turned learning Italian into a celebration.
Term 1 PEP Overview
Respectful Relationships – Emotional Literacy and Personal Strengths
This term in our Prep to Year 6 Respectful Relationships lessons, students will focus on developing emotional literacy and recognising personal strengths. These important skills support students to better understand themselves and others, build positive relationships and strengthen their overall wellbeing. Students have the opportunity to participate in weekly PEP lessons where Respectful Relationships is embedded.
Students will explore how talking about our feelings helps us to understand ourselves and the people around us. They will build their emotional vocabulary and learn strategies to recognise and manage emotions in positive ways. Through class discussions and activities, students will learn how to understand their emotions, express how they feel, see situations from another person’s perspective and respond appropriately to the emotions of others.
Students will also learn about identifying and valuing their strengths and positive qualities, as well as recognising these in others. Throughout the unit, students will learn how to talk about their strengths, recognise their own positive qualities, appreciate the strengths of others and apply these when discussing personal, social and ethical challenges.
