Advice for Parents – Upcoming NAPLAN Tests

The NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) tests are just one way schools gather information about student progress in literacy and numeracy. They are not a measure of your child’s overall ability or potential.

How Parents Can Support Their Child

1. Keep it low pressure

Reassure your child that NAPLAN is simply an opportunity to show what they already know. Avoid placing extra pressure or linking results to rewards or consequences.

2. Maintain normal routines

  • Ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep.
  • Provide a healthy breakfast.
  • Arrive at school on time to avoid unnecessary stress.

3. Encourage a positive mindset

Remind your child:

  • “Just try your best.”
  • “It’s okay not to know every answer.”
  • “Mistakes are part of learning.”

4. Keep conversations balanced

If your child feels nervous, listen calmly and acknowledge their feelings. Let them know that feeling a little nervous is normal.

5. Limit last-minute cramming

There is no need for intensive preparation. Reading regularly, practising basic maths facts, and encouraging writing for enjoyment are helpful — but daily routines are enough.

6. Keep perspective

NAPLAN is one snapshot of learning. Teachers use many different forms of assessment throughout the year to understand and support each child’s progress.
