New - National Apology Day
On Friday morning the FIRE Carriers and some of our Year 5 and 6 indigenous students represented St Mary’s at the eighteenth anniversary of the National Apology Day. It was a very moving service to remember the Stolen Generation with a Smoking Ceremony, a Welcome to Country in language by Dr Neil Morris.
The guest speaker was Jo Youssef, the director of the Stolen Generations Reparations Unit. Since the Bringing Them Home Report in 1997, Kevin Rudd was driven to act on this. On the 13th of February in 2008, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd offered a formal apology to Australia’s Indigenous peoples, particularly the Stolen Generations, on behalf of the nation at Australian Parliament House.
The Apology was presented as a motion for voting to the Chamber. It acknowledged that ‘the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments had resulted in the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and ‘inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians’.
Between 1910 and 1970 thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were forcibly removed from their families and communities by churches, welfare organisations and governments. The exact number is not known. However, is estimated that, anywhere from 1 in 10 to 1 in 3 Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families and fostered or adopted by non-Indigenous families or raised in institutions. These children are known as the Stolen Generations. Many experienced neglect, physical and sexual abuse and exploitative labour, and were denied contact with their families.
Since the Bringing Them Home Report was presented in Parliament all those years ago, very little has changed and many of the recommendations have not been met. With the inclusion of Treaty into the Victorian Parliament last year, it is hoped that we will see changes to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
New - Excursion
On Tuesday 24th of February, our FIRE Carriers and indigenous students from Year 5 and 6 will be visiting Kaiela Arts in Shepparton from 10 am to 12 pm. The students will participate in a Gallery Talk & Yorta Yorta Yedabila – Ceramics class. We look forward to the students sharing with us at Assembly in coming weeks what they have learnt.
