Mr David Turpie - Senior School Teacher - Music & Instrumental Music Instructor
David is a gifted musician, whose exceptional talent behind the drums is surpassed only by his passion for teaching the next generation of percussionists.
His colleagues describe his teaching style as one of gentle yet relentless pressure. Understanding that students rise to the expectations you set for them, he sets them sky-high, while equipping them with the skills and assurance they need to soar to those heights.
David’s personable nature brings out the best in his students, engendering in them a lifelong love of music. He has a rare gift for drawing out the potential of even the most reserved students, making them feel seen and valued, and creating a musical sanctuary for those who may not quite fit in elsewhere.
His students describe him as kind, engaging and endlessly supportive, a mentor who readily shares words of encouragement and celebrates their successes. One of his Junior School students affectionally describes him as “the best – he is kind, easy to talk to and really funny!”
As the SMC of Senior Concert Band, a member of Big Band, Jazz Band and Wind Symphony, and the first to raise his hand when an impromptu rock group is required, David is the quiet and unassuming beating heart – or beating bass drum – of the Performing Arts Co-Curricular Program.
Whether in the instrumental music room or classroom, or on stage with baton, drumsticks or cymbals in hand, he can always be counted on to deliver extraordinary experiences for his students and for the entire Girton community.
Mr David Turpie, for 20 years of outstanding service to Girton Grammar School, we thank you.
