30 January 2026

Dear Chevalier Community,
Welcome to the start of a new school year, a year when we celebrate 80 years as a Catholic learning community led by our MSC charism. As we gather again with optimism and excitement for the year ahead, it feels important to first recognise the difficulties that many Australians have faced over the holiday period.
Across Western Australia, South Australia, and Victoria, bushfires, especially the devastating Longwood Fires, have left families grieving loved ones, losing homes, and rebuilding lives from the ground up. In North Queensland, severe flooding has taken livestock and livelihoods. Communities along our coastline continue to grapple with the trauma of recent shark attacks. And, as a nation, we are still coming to terms with the heartbreak of the Bondi Massacre in December - a tragedy that will reverberate through families and communities for a long time to come.
To all who have been impacted by these events, our hearts go out to you. In times like these, the need for compassionate, connected, heart‑centred communities has never been more necessary.
Chevalier College celebrating 80 years
As we step into a new school year, there is always a sense of anticipation — a familiar blend of excitement, possibility, and promise. The first bell of the year has a way of resetting the rhythm of our lives. Classrooms come alive again, friendships pick up where they left off (or begin anew), and fresh goals take shape. The start of any school year feels like opening the first page of a new chapter.
But this year, that feeling carries a deeper resonance.
Since our foundation in 1946, thousands of students, families, teachers, MSC priests and brothers, and support staff have poured their hearts into this place. Their collective story has shaped who we are today: a heart‑centred community grounded in the Spirituality of the Heart and committed to making a positive difference in the world.
Our 80‑year journey is written in the people and places of Chev
- in the houses named for those who embodied courage, compassion, service, and faith;
- in the priests, brothers, staff, students and families who have gone before us;
- in the students who have walked these corridors; and
- in the alumni who continue to influence their fields, serve their communities, and lift the lives of others.
This anniversary invites us not only to look back with gratitude, but to recognise that we stand on the shoulders of many who believed in the gentle influence of a spirituality of the heart. Their legacy lives on in the way we teach, lead, learn, care, and grow together. It lives on in the distinctive MSC way that shapes us: to be people who love generously, act justly, and engage the world with hope.
As we begin this milestone year, the excitement we feel is not simply about what lies ahead, but also about honouring where we have come from, and acknowledging the extraordinary community that continues to make Chev such a special place.
A Message to Students – “Get Off the Bank and Into the River!”
At our Opening Student Assembly earlier today, I invited our young people to picture a wide, moving river, alive with possibility. On the riverbank, life feels safe, familiar, predictable. You can sit there and watch the current go by, telling yourself, “Maybe later.” Nothing changes.
Step into the water, even with some uncertainty, and everything shifts. The river lifts you, carries you, wakes you up. You move from being an observer to becoming a participant in your life.
This year at Chev, that river is our community: our staff, our students, and your families. The water is everything we offer: learning, retreats, music, sport, the arts, service, leadership, friendships, faith, and a thousand small opportunities to become more fully who you are.
Of course, there will be rapids along the way. Fast weeks. Tough conversations. Assignments and deadlines. Disappointments and steep learning curves. But, as I reminded students this morning: you are not alone in the river. Our MSC way calls us to kindness, compassion, inclusivity, and hospitality. Those in the water with you are your safety crew.
And when one needs to catch one’s breath, the shoreline is always there with your Homeroom Tutors, teachers, counsellors, learning support staff, friends and family. The shore exists so you can step back into the river, so much stronger.
On Day 1, I offered students a simple invitation:
- If you’ve been sitting on the bank - have a go!
- If you dipped a toe in last year - jump in!
- If you’re already midstream - help someone else launch.
At Chevalier, we often say, “The heart of education is the education of the heart.” This year, let’s continue to grow in knowledge, in courage, and through the Spirituality of the Heart.
As we begin our 80 years as a College community, may students, staff, and families choose to move, choose to belong, and choose to become.
Let’s get off the bank and get in the river!
Celebrating Excellence – Industry Recognition
Amid the challenges of the world around us, it is also important to recognise the bright moments and achievements within our own community.
Late last year, Chevalier College was recognised as a 5‑Star Innovative School by The Educator, one of only 42 schools nationwide. This achievement acknowledges our commitment to:
- lead pedagogical innovation,
- challenge traditional educational paradigms,
- prepare students for a rapidly changing world,
- shape flexible, future‑focused curriculum, and
- create modern learning environments that support student growth.
This recognition affirms what many of us already know: Chev is a place where possibility thrives.
We were also thrilled to celebrate our Assistant Principal – New Ambitions and Innovation, Ms Jo Kirby, whose work has had a profound impact on learning and leadership at Chevalier. In 2025, Jo was honoured twice:
- In October - awarded Fellow of the Teachers’ Guild of NSW, acknowledging her exceptional contribution and leadership in our profession.
- In December - named one of Australia’s “Hot 50 Educators” for being a professional who lifts the stakes for education nationwide.
We are very proud of Jo and grateful for the vision, courage, and creativity she brings to our community.
Looking Forward
As we begin the journey of 2026 together, let us be a community that lifts one another, supports one another, and steps boldly into the river of opportunity that lies ahead.
Thank you for your trust, your partnership, and your belief in Chevalier College.
Welcome back, and may 2026 be a year of growth, connection, and a place where the Sacred Heart of Jesus is known and loved.
Warm regards,
Greg Miller

Back to School - Looking after our Students Wellbeing
It was lovely to welcome all our students back to Chev for the beginning our new school year. Coming back after a long break can be difficult for some of our students and most students need some readjusting to their routines and structure.
Please see some ideas that may be helpful in supporting your children.
Tips for a Smooth Return
Structure: Create an orderly and calm home environment with a tidy, organised space for study.
Routine: Re-establish school-night routines (bedtime, wake-up times) a few days before term starts.
Connection: Encourage open communication about school, and foster connections with teachers.
An article from Reach Out covers some ideas around conversations with your children about getting back into the school routine. It covers areas that we as a College will cover in our conversations with them, supporting their Wellbeing as they start the new school year.
To read the article please click on the link HERE.
As always if you have any concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s Home Room Tutor or Leader of House.
