Numeracy

This year, at Sunshine Heights Primary School, students in Years 1 and 2 will be learning mathematics through the Explicit Maths Program (EMP). EMP is a high-quality, evidence-informed program that supports students to develop strong mathematical understanding and confidence.

The Explicit Maths Program focuses on clear and structured teaching, where new skills and concepts are carefully explained, modelled and practised. Teachers will guide students step-by-step to help them build knowledge and develop problem-solving skills in a supportive learning environment.

As part of the program, students participate in a daily review of previously taught concepts. This helps strengthen memory, builds confidence and ensures important skills are continually practised. Students will also take part in fluency activities, which help them develop accuracy, speed and flexibility when working with numbers.
